Aïnhoa ligt vlakbij de grens met Spanje in Frans Baskenland in de Pyreneeën. De mooie vakwerkhuizen met hun rode luiken zijn kenmerkend voor deze streek en geven het dorp karakter. Het dorp is gebouwd als een bastide en is daarmee waarschijnlijk de zuidelijkste in zijn soort. Hoog boven het dorp staan drie witte kruizen op een berg met daarbij een begraafplaats met typische Baskische grafstenen.

Aïnhoa ligt op de pelgrimsroute naar Santiago de Compostella in Spanje. Aan het einde van middeleeuwen was dit een bijzondere populaire route met verschillende startpunten.

Omdat in Spanje te komen moet je natuurlijk de Pyreneeën over en dat kon maar op maar een paar plekken en Aïnhoa ligt op één van deze routes over de bergen. Hoewel de meeste pelgrims het gebergte iets oostelijker overstaken moet het hier toch behoorlijk druk zijn geweest.

Ook nu is deze pelgrimstocht weer populair en je moet dan ook niet raar staan te kijken als je iemand tegenkomt met een stok en een schelp, het teken van de pelgrims.

Een kerk mag natuurlijk niet ontbreken en die heeft het dorp dan ook. Het is een redelijk bijzonder gebouw met een over het algemeen een rustig, bijna sober, interieur. Op het altaar na want die is rijk versiert.
