Saint-Saturnin ligt in de Puy de Dôme even ten zuiden van Clermont-Ferrand. Het dorp speelde in de middeleeuwen een bescheiden rol in de Franse geschiedenis. De adellijke familie uit het dorp wist door een uitgekiende strategie, opportunisme en een flinke dosis geluk een nazaat zelfs op de Franse troon te krijgen.

Hoe is dat zo gekomen. Catherina de’Medici was de vrouw van Hendrik II en zoals haar naam al aangeeft een dochter van de beroemde bankier in Florence. Deze prachtige stad in Toscane was in de zestiende eeuw één van de modernste en dynamische van de wereld waar de Renaissance zo’n beetje is uitgevonden. Het is daarom verbazend dat de machtigste man uit die stad trouwt met een edelvrouw uit de Auvergne, toch een beetje achterlijk gebied. Enfin, het gebeurde toch en uit dat huwelijk werd Catherina geboren die op haar beurt trouwde met de koning van de Frankrijk.

Als koningin zette ze haar stempel op de Franse geschiedenis. Natuurlijk kennen we Catherina als regentes voor haar zoon waardoor ze grote invloed had op de politiek. Maar haar invloed op cultureel gebied is waarschijnlijk nog veel groter. Door haar komst werd de cultuur van de Italische Renaissance in de Franse cultuur geïntroduceerd om nooit meer weg te gaan.

Van deze invloed is aan de gebouwen in Saint-Saturnin niet te zien want die zijn allemaal Romaans of gotisch. De Onze Lieve Vrouwe kerk is de kleinste van de vijf belangrijkste Romaanse kerken in de Auvergne. Buiten is hij redelijk somber uitgevoerd en heeft een kenmerkend rond koor en een achthoekige toren. Binnen is de vormgeving massief maar toch elegant. De tal van kunstschatten bewijst dat deze kerk belangrijk is.

Natuurlijk heeft Saint-Saturnin ook een kasteel. Het is in de dertiende eeuw gebouwd en elke eeuw daarna wel verbouwd. De prachtige Franse tuin maakt het complex helemaal af. Waar vroeger een kasteel alleen voor de adel was, kan nu iedereen er in slapen want het is momenteel een hotel.

Helaas voor het dorp staat het niet meer op de lijst van ‘Le plus beaux villages de France’ maar dat wil nog niet zeggen dat het geen mooi dorp is.
