Monclus ligt prachtig op de oevers van de Cèze. Het aanzicht van het dorp wordt gedomineerd door de grote vierkante donjon die ooit onderdeel was van het kasteel waarvan de rest grotendeels is verdwenen. De prachtige lavendelvelden en de dichte bossen geven het landschap waar het dorp in ligt een vriendelijk en romantisch karakter.

Dat de streek waarin Monclus ligt een aangename plek is om te verblijven wordt duidelijk aan de hand van opgravingen die in de directe omgeving zijn gedaan. Archeologen gaan er vanuit dat hier al 8.000 jaar geleden mensen woonden. De combinatie van een klimaat, de aanwezigheid van water en grotten maakten de streek rondom het dorp een prima plek om te wonen.

Het dorp zelf is natuurlijk minder oud en ontstond in de middeleeuwen rondom het kasteel waarvan nu het donjon het meest zichtbare gebouw is. De grotten speelden trouwens nog een lange tijd een rol voor de bewoners want de monniken die in de dertiende eeuw in Monclus een klooster bouwden, verbleven daarvoor in de grotten. Dat klinkt uitzonderlijk maar in de middeleeuwen waren grotten een populair onderkomen voor gelovigen die dichterbij god wilden komen. Na de monniken werden de grotten nog lang gebruikt door de Tempeliers. Het dorpje is autovrij en het is heerlijk wandelen door de kleine straatjes en steegjes waarvan een deel overdekt zijn.
