Als je Tournemire nadert valt het oog onherroepelijk op het kasteel aan de zijkant van het dorp. Het Château d’Anjony lijkt nog het meest op een toren van een duur schaakspel en steekt hoog boven het dorp uit dat in een wijde vallei ligt, die ooit door een gletsjer is gevormd. In het mooie dorpje in de Auvergne hangt een prettige, mystieke sfeer en dat is goed voor twee sterren.

Het kenmerkende kasteel van Tournemire is een restant van de Honderdjarige oorlog tussen Engeland en Frankrijk. Louis d’Anjony, één van de strijdmakkers van Jeanne d’Arc, kreeg opdracht om het gebied te verdedigen. En dat deed je toen door een kasteel te bouwen. De opvallend compacte bouw heeft waarschijnlijk te maken met het gebrek aan ruimte in het dorp en de steile bergen.

Château d’Anjony

De bouw van het Chateau was echter tegen het zere been van de plaatselijke adellijke familie, met de toepasselijke naam Tournemire. De families kwamen in een ware vendetta terecht die eeuwen heeft geduurd. De uitkomst is dat de familie Tournemire uiteindelijk moest verhuizen naar de Limousin, ook een mooi gebied natuurlijk. Vandaag de dag wordt het kasteel nog altijd bewoond door de familie d’Anjony.

Opvallend is dat het kasteel, ondanks de roerige tijden, nog geheel in de staat is zoals het in de veertiende eeuw is gebouwd. Om het comfort wat te verhogen is er in de achttiende eeuw een vleugel bijgebouwd volgens de toenmalige smaak, Lodewijk XV-stijl dus.

Château d’Anjony is na twee uur ‘s middags te bezichtigen. Helaas waren wij er ‘s ochtends dus wij zijn niet binnen geweest. Dat is wel jammer, want het ziet er van buiten zeer spannend uit en ik ben echt benieuwd hoe de kamers er binnen uitzien. Naast de kamers zijn er in het kasteel prachtige Vlaamse wandkleden te zien. Aangezien we vaak in de buurt zijn, zal een bezoek er nog wel van komen.

Hoewel het kasteel een echte eye-catcher is, heeft Tournemire meer te bieden. Als je aankomt doe je er goed aan om de auto te parkeren op de parkeerplaats voor het dorp. Je maakt dan een mooie wandeling door het dorp naar het kasteel waarbij je kan genieten van de mooie huizen en het prachtige uitzicht op het dal.

Het dorp Tournemire

Zoals in elk bergdorp in de Auvergne staat er op het centrale plein een fontein. Daar vlakbij vind je de robuust gebouwde kerk die in de twaalfde eeuw is gebouwd. Net als de rest van de huizen in het dorp is deze gebouwd van rood vulkaansteen. De inwoners doen echt hun best om hun mooie dorp er goed uit te laten zien. Bij ons bezoek in het begin van mei stond het vol met bloemen, dat maakt een bezoek toch altijd net iets leuker.

Naast de kerk vind je in het dorp nog een heus museum: Les automates de Gilles Million. Het gaat om een uitstalling van gereedschappen van oude ambachtslieden, altijd leuk bij een regenachtige middag. Helaas was het gesloten in mei en dat gold ook voor de herberg tegenover het museum.

Vulkanen van de Cantal

In het gehele dorp heb je schitterend uitzicht over het brede dal. De bergen zijn gevormd door een enorme vulkaan van 3.000 meter hoog. In het museum over vulkanen in Aurillac leerden we dat er ooit een berg stond van 27 kilometer hoog, maar dat is wel heel hoog en ook heel lang geleden. Het ding was in ieder geval explosief en is ook redelijk recent, ongeveer 100.000 jaar geleden, nog ontploft. Hoewel de vulkaan is gedoofd rommelt het nog geregeld onder de grond in de Cantal.

De vallei waarin Tournemire ligt is echter niet gemaakt door vulkanen, maar door een gletsjer. Door de hoogte krijgt de Cantal in een ijstijd zijn eigen ijskap met bijbehorende gletsjers en één daarvan heeft het dal in de vulkanische rotsen bij Tournemire uitgesleten. Resultaat is een mooi afgerond dal in een U-vorm.

Wandelen

Wandelen kan je natuurlijk heerlijk in het dorp, maar als je wat langer wilt wandelen kan je Tournemire prima als startplek gebruiken voor een tocht door de ruige natuur van de Cantal.

In de omgeving

De afstanden in de Cantal zijn enorm. Wij komen er veel en zijn iedere keer toch weer verbaasd hoeveel kilometers we na een week hebben gereden. Even boodschappen in het volgende dorp? Je bent zo zeventien kilometer verder. Toch liggen er een aantal interessante plaatsen in de buurt van Tournemire. Salers, een ander ‘Plus Beaux Village’ ligt redelijk dichtbij. Aurillac, de hoofdstad van de Cantal, ligt ook niet ver weg. En als je toch aan het rijden bent, dan mag je de Puy Mary niet missen. Zeker niet als je de Pas de Peyrol pakt, een indrukwekkende route naar de toppen van de Cantal.
