Apremont-sur-Allier ligt slechts een paar kilometer van Nevers aan de oever van de rivier de Allier. Deze brede rivier geeft het dorp zijn karakter. Apremont bestaat feitelijk uit twee rijen huizen en die vormen samen een straat. De andere straat van het dorpje loopt evenwijdig aan het eerste straatje maar met een prachtig uitzicht op de rivier.

Naast de rivier vormt het kasteel de andere grote attractie van Apremont sur Allier. Wij zijn er niet in geweest, het was dicht. Het dorpje heeft wel een mooie ligging, maar vormt niet een natuurlijke schoonheid zoals sommige andere ‘Plus Beaux Villages’. Daarvoor is eigenlijk net te vlak.

De inwoners moeten dan ook hun uiterste best doen om het dorp in het bekende boekje te houden en dat doen ze dan ook. De tuinen zijn prachtig verzorgd met mooie bloemen en de heggen keurig geknipt. Het dorp beschikt tevens over een enorm park met nog meer bloemen, waar je heerlijk kan wandelen.

Wij hebben gegeten in het enige restaurant, Brasserie du Lavoir, van het dorp en dat beviel prima. Fijne gerechten uit de streek waar niets mis mee is. Het terras is gelegen achter het restaurant op een keurig grasveld. Dat is wel zo koel in de zomer.

In de omgeving van Apremont sur Allier

In de omgeving van Apremont is natuurlijk het Formule 1 circuit van Nevers te vinden. Wie het motorgeronk liever naast zich houdt, kan beter Nevers bezoeken. Daar is met name het paleis van de Hertog de moeite waard. Iets verder weg ligt Bourges met zijn prachtige kathedraal.

Leuker is dat de Fransen vlak bij het dorpje in de achttiende eeuw hebben geprobeerd de Allier en de Loire bevaarbaar te maken. Dat lukte niet en dus hebben ze een kanaal naast de Allier gegraven. Een onderdeel hiervan is het Aquaduct le Guétin die de boten over de Allier brengt.

Verder stroomafwaarts vind je in Briare ook zo’n aquaduct. Die is bekender en groter, maar het Aquaduct le Guétin is wellicht interessanter om te bezoeken omdat de boten door een aantal sluizen worden ‘opgetild’ om zo over de rivier te kunnen varen.

Naast deze waterwerken zijn er in de streek behoorlijk wat middeleeuwse kastelen te vinden.
