Vézelay is mogelijk de bekendste ‘Plus Beaux de Village de France’. Het plaatsje staat bol van geschiedenis, religie en cultuur en wordt in de zomer druk bezocht door toeristen. De bekende Michelingids geeft Vézelay het predicaat ‘De reis waard’ en dat is volkomen terecht! Wij geven dit prachtige dorp dan ook vijf sterren. Zo snel mogelijk gaan dus!

Vézelay is gebouwd op de top van een berg waarvan het hoogste puntje is gereserveerd voor de abdijkerk van het plaatsje. Als je komt aanrijden, zowel uit Clamecy als uit Avallon, geeft dit een magnifiek aangezicht. Je krijgt direct helemaal zin om het dorpje te bezoeken!

De auto kan je het best parkeren onderaan de heuvel aan het begin van het dorp. Verder kom je niet want het centrum van het dorp is alleen voor bewoners bereikbaar met de auto. ‘s Winters kan je wel het dorp binnenrijden, maar het is veel leuker om naar boven te wandelen.

Santiago de Compostella

Direct bij de ingang van het dorp vind je op de grond een gouden schelp. Dit is het begin van de pelgrimstocht naar Santiago de Compostella. Dit was in de middeleeuwen een uiterst populaire tocht die ook tegenwoordig nog veel wordt gelopen. Lijkt mij interessant om dit ook eens te doen, voor als we tijd hebben.

In het dorp zelf word je vanzelf door de hoofdstraat naar de Romaanse Basiliek geleid. In de zomer is dit een drukke straat met tal van winkeltjes, restaurantjes en kunstgaleries. Want naast bedevaartsoord, is Vézelay ook de woonplaats van kunstenaars. En hoewel het geen enorme wandeling is naar de abdijkerk, de weg ernaartoe is soms gemeen stijl. Zeker in de zomer is het dan prettig om te weten dat er altijd een terras met een koel glas rosé binnen handbereik is.

Wie de klim heeft volbracht komt op een prachtig pleintje voor de abdijkerk. De kerk is oud en heeft een bewogen geschiedenis. Iedereen met een beetje kunsthistorische blik ziet dat het voorste gedeelte van de kerk, het schip, het oudst is. Het is gebouwd in de elfde eeuw. Na een brand in de dertiende eeuw is de kerk opnieuw opgebouwd en is het gotisch koor toegevoegd.

Religieus gezien ligt het hoogtepunt onder het altaar. Daar bevinden zich de resten van Maria Magdalena, een onderarm of zoiets. Ook voor atheïsten en andere heidenen die niet geloven in het vereren van lichamen is het toch een aanrader om even een kijkje te nemen in de crypte. De ruimte is nauw, krap, indrukwekkend en je hebt het gevoel dat je zo de middeleeuwen binnen loopt.

Kunsthistorisch gezien vind je het hoogtepunt in het portaal boven de hoofdingang. Het tympaan geldt als één van de mooiste Romaanse werken in Frankrijk, en wellicht van de wereld. Het is prachtig! Neem dus even de tijd om het goed te bekijken. In het midden zit Jezus met om hem heen de 12 apostelen. Het stelt het moment voor dat de Heer aan zijn metgezellen vertelt dat ze zijn woord over de wereld moeten verspreiden. De bijbel hebben ze dan ook in de hand en de apostelen worden omringd door allerlei rare volkeren die nog niet zijn bekeerd. Daarboven zijn de 12 maanden van het jaar uitgebeeld in de vorm van werkende lieden, elke maand kende in de twaalfde eeuw zo zijn eigen werkzaamheden.

Neem even de tijd om het op je in te laten werken en dan zal je opvallen dat de figuren een zekere dynamiek en beweging hebben. Dat is voor die tijd redelijk bijzonder, de meeste afbeeldingen waren statisch en formeel.

Geschiedenis

Vézelay kende in haar lange tijd van bestaan een bewogen geschiedenis en zeker in de middeleeuwen was het een komen en gaan van celebrities. Zo riep Bernard van Clairvaux in 1145 hier op tot de Tweede kruistocht. Na heel wat politiek geharrewar pakten

de koningen van Frankrijk en Engeland en de Duitse Keizer het kruis op en vertrokken onafhankelijk van elkaar naar het heilige land. Het werd geen succes.

Vézelay was een dikke eeuw later het startpunt voor de Derde Kruistocht. In het dorp verzamelden zich de Franse en de Engelse koning. Dit zijn wellicht de bekendste middeleeuwse koningen: Philips II Augustus en Richard Leeuwenhart. Ook deze tocht werd niet echt een succes, al was het wel spannend.

Andere middeleeuwse supersterren die Vézelay bezochten, waren Thomas Beckett die zich in de twaalfde eeuw hier verstopte voor de Engelse koning. Al mocht dat niet baten. Ook Eleonora van Aquitanië bezocht Vézelay. Eleonora geldt als de vleesgeworden hoofse liefde, beschermvrouwe van dichters en zangers maar ze bezat ook een uitstekend politiek instinct. Zij was zowel getrouwd met de Engelse als Franse koning.

Wij hebben twee drie keer Vézelay bezocht. In 2007 waren wij er in augustus en in 2013 in februari. De verschillen zijn enorm. Je kan je in de zomer niet voorstellen hoe koud het er kan zijn en ‘s zomers is het onwaarschijnlijk hoe rustig het hier is in de winter.
