In de Finistère vlak naast het Parc Naturel Régional d’Armorique ligt Le Faou. Het dorpje ligt aan een binnenzee en heeft een haventje. In de zestiende eeuw was Le Faou een drukke plaats waar veel schepen werden gebouwd. Veel huizen in het dorp zijn uit deze tijd en je kan er dan ook heerlijk wandelen, waarna je de honger kan stillen aan een eenvoudige doch voedzame maaltijd. Wie nog energie overheeft kan vervolgens een frisse wandeling in de natuur maken.

Le Faou behoort sinds 2014 niet meer bij de club ‘Plus Beaux Villages de France’. Dat is niet omdat het dorp ineens heel lelijk is geworden maar omdat het verkeer te dominant aanwezig is in het Le Faou. En dat mag niet van de organisatie.

Dat is best een beetje knullig want wie even op de kaart kijkt ziet direct dat het dorp er weinig aan kan doen want de regionale verbindingsweg loopt gewoon door het dorp. Je zou deze helemaal moeten omleggen wil je het verkeer uit het dorp weren.

Het was voor ons niet echt een reden om Le Faou aan te doen tijdens een dagtripje door Bretagne. Bij aankomst valt allereerst de brug over de rivier op. Het water heeft aan de ene kant van de oude stenen brug een totaal andere karakter dan aan de andere kant.

De rivier heeft aan de oostkant van het bouwsel het aanzien van een flinke beek, aan de andere kant ziet het er uit als een baai. Al was dat niet het geval bij onze aankomst want het was eb en net als in de rest van Bretagne heeft de zee hier een enorm verval en stond de hele baai leeg.

De kerk die naast de brug en langs de baai staat is één van de meest interessante gebouwen van La Faou. Het heeft die typische Bretonse lage bouw compleet met een dunne en open toren. Het gebouw is zeer gevarieerd en je ogen hebben daarom genoeg te doen en ook binnen is er aardig wat te zien.

De rest van het dorp was zoals goed Frans gebruik bijna uitgestorven. Toch is er aardig wat middenstand zoals een bakker en een veelbelovende slager. Daarnaast zijn er tal van restaurantjes die er ook goed uitzagen; hier komt de innige mens niets te kort.

De architectuur van de huizen valt op. De dakpannen worden hier ook verticaal gebruikt zoals ook in Noord-Holland wel voorkomt. De gebouwen hebben daarbij zeer aardige en leuke details die in eerste instantie niet opvallen.
