Als je op Lavardens komt aanrijden dan trekt het kasteel direct de aandacht. Ooit een stoer militair gebouw maar in de zeventiende eeuw omgebouwd tot een fraai lustoord met opvallende architectuur. Naast het kasteel heeft het dorp nog een leuke kerk en, vreemd genoeg, een telefoonmuseum.

In de twaalfde eeuw werd er op een rots boven wat later het dorp zou worden een kasteel gebouwd en dat werd direct ook de militaire machtsbasis van de graaf van Armagnac. Nadat het in de late middeleeuwen bij een belegering werd verwoest verbouwde Antoine de Roquelaure het in de vroege zeventiende eeuw tot lustoord om zijn liefde voor zijn jonge vrouw te laten zien. Helaas overleed de man voordat het werk af is en dat heeft ook wel iets dramatisch. Of dit iets zegt over de liefde of de jonge vrouw is niet duidelijk.

Naast het kasteel is ook het hele dorp ooit ommuurd geweest. Dat is helaas nu niet het geval meer maar er zijn nog vijf torens. De hoogste daarvan is vijftien meter hoog en die is ziet er ook het best uit.
Het huidige kasteel heeft tijdens deze verbouwing zijn huidige vorm gekregen en het heeft een soort van natuurlijke schoonheid. De eenvoudige vormen en de goede verhoudingen maken het kasteel een prachtig bouwwerk dat ook nog eens interessante vertrekken heeft. Sommige daarvan hebben een prachtige vloer van natuursteen die op een unieke wijze is gelegd. Daarbij bezitten sommige kamers een prachtige akoestiek. In de zomer worden hier concerten gehouden.
In de negentiende eeuw raakt het kasteel in verval waarna pas in 1970 een serieus plan wordt gemaakt om het kasteel van Lavardens te redden. Dat is gelukt en nu zijn er tentoonstellingen en andere culturele zaken te zien. Het bekijken van het kasteel is dan ook een must bij een bezoek aan het dorp.
Natuurlijk is het dorp meer dan het kasteel en je kan er ook goed eten. Er zijn meerdere restaurants waar je plaatselijke specialiteiten tot je kan nemen. Vergeet daarbij na de dis een lekker glas Armagnac niet.
