Het klooster werd in de zesde eeuw gesticht door de heilige Ronan. We weten niet zo veel over deze goede man maar hij was waarschijnlijk afkomstig uit Ierland en naar Bretagne afgereisd om het christendom te promoten. Het dorpje ligt aan een binnenzee en heeft een haventje. In de zestiende eeuw was Le Faou een drukke plaats waar veel schepen werden gebouwd. Veel huizen in het dorp zijn uit deze tijd en je kan er dan ook heerlijk wandelen, waarna je de honger kan stillen aan een eenvoudige doch voedzame maaltijd.
