Essoyes ligt in de Champagne iets ten zuiden van Troyes. De Champagne is niet echt mijn favoriete streek in Frankrijk maar het zuidelijkste gedeelte, de Aube, dat tegen Bourgondië ligt kan mij wel bekoren. Het landschap is daar wat ruiger waar je heerlijk kan wandelen en waar de dorpen mooi zijn. Ze zijn niet allemaal even mooi en interessant maar Essoyes is dit zeker wel. Daarbij heeft het dorp een rijke historie en was bovendien de woonplaats één van Frankrijks beroemdste schilders: Auguste Renoir.

De Champagne staat natuurlijk bekend om haar bubbelwijn die sinds de achttiende eeuw dankzij een uitgekiende marketingstrategie bekender is dan de streek. Ik vind het best lekker maar eerlijk gezegd proef ik het verschil niet met een goede Crémant uit Bourgondië, de Loire of de Elzas niet. Of eigenlijk wel want die laatste zijn vaak lekkerder. Dat is wellicht iets persoonlijkst al kan ik iedereen aanraden om eens een Crémant van rond de zeven euro in de Franse supermarkt mee te nemen. Gekoeld met eventueel een scheut Crème de Cassis op een warme zomermiddag maakt mijn vakantiegevoel helemaal compleet. Zin in!

Renoir

Maar goed, terug naar Essoyes de woonplaats van Renoir. Om even het geheugen op te frissen; Dit was een zeer belangrijke schilder uit Frankrijk die leefde tijdens de vorige eeuwwisseling. Hij behoort tot de stroming van het Impressionisme dat rond die tijd nogal hip was in Frankrijk en met name in en rond Parijs. Uit deze stroming zijn de beroemdste schilders gekomen, denk maar eens aan Cezanne en Claude Monet. Die laatste verbleef ook een tijdje in Nederland en wel in mijn woonplaats Zaandam waar een enthousiaste groep vrijwilligers zich inzet maar dat is natuurlijk bijzaak voor dit verhaal.

Trek naar het platteland

De Impressionisten woonden in grote steden, met name Parijs, waar ze werkten, woonden, feest vierden, dronken en met allerlei geestverruimende middelen experimenteerden. Rond 1880 kwam daar verandering in en bedachten ze dat het leven in de grote stad ook niet altijd jé van het was. Er werd besloten dat het platteland en de ruige natuur voor inspiratie zou zorgen en dus namen ze massaal de trein, auto’s waren er toen nog niet, om de provincie van Frankrijk te ontdekken. Hier in de dorpen zouden de mensen nog echt zijn, echt leven, echt eten en deze onbedorven boeren zouden voor de beste inspiratie zorgen. Komt het je bekend voor? Maar goed, het kan natuurlijk ook dat de Impressionisten zo de ellende van drank en drug wilden ontvluchten.

Dit idee is eigenlijk nooit meer uit de mode geraakt want iedere Frankrijkliefhebber weet dat een beetje dorp in Frankrijk niet compleet is zonder een kerk, een pharmacie en een kunstenaar met een gallery. Over invloedrijke ideeën gesproken; het is niet zo heel moeilijk om te concluderen dat deze trek naar het rurale Frankrijk elk jaar in de zomer dunnetjes wordt overgedaan door miljoenen Nederlanders. Het feit dat je dit leest op deze site is eigenlijk het gevolg van een idee dat een stel avant-gardisten in de negentiende eeuw hebben bedacht. Of ligt het toch wat ingewikkelder?

De mooiste schilderijen

Hoe dan ook de ontdekkingstocht van het platteland door de Impressionisten heeft een aantal uitzonderlijk briljante werkjes opgeleverd die behoren tot de mooiste dingen die de mensheid heeft voorgebracht. Monet schilderde zijn waterlelies, Van Gogh zijn sterrennacht en Renoir de Lunch van de Roeiers om maar eens wat op te noemen. Al behoort Van Gogh eigenlijk niet tot het Impressionisme maar is daar toch heel erg door beïnvloed.

Ook Renoir trok naar het platteland en gezien de afstand tot Parijs lijkt het dat hij niet heel erg zijn best heeft gedaan om het rurale leven te ontdekken. Maar zo ligt het toch niet helemaal want voordat hij uiteindelijk neerstreek in het zuiden van de Champagne woonde hij een tijdje langs de Côte d’Azur in de buurt van Nice. Dat hij deze spectaculaire en prachtige streek verliet voor Essoyes lijkt een krankzinnige beslissing. Dat was het natuurlijk ook maar het had alles te maken met liefde: zijn vrouw kwam uit het dorp aan het riviertje de Oucre.

De kunstenaar bleef tot aan zijn dood in Essoyes wonen en is nog altijd alom aanwezig. Het Office du Toerisme doet er ook alles aan om met Renoir zoveel mogelijk toeristen te trekken. En dat mag ook best want het is een leuk dorp, zeker in deze streek. Natuurlijk is er een museum waar het verhaal van de schilder wordt verteld maar daar blijft het niet bij. Er is een hele route uitgezet die je langs belangrijke plekken leidt. Zijn woonhuis, zijn atelier, plaatsen die hij heeft geschilderd en natuurlijk zijn graf, het komt allemaal langs. Hiermee ben je zeker een half dagje zoet mee en het moet gezegd worden dat het dorp echt mooi is.

Door het centrum kabbelt het riviertje de Oucre langs de hoge kade’s die worden verbonden door een stalen voetgangersbrug met daarnaast een oude wasplaats het plaatje compleet maakt. Het is dan ook goed toeven op één van de terras langs het water waar de plaatselijke witte bruiswijn nooit ver weg is. Wij zijn twee keer in dit dorp geweest en de eerste keer hebben we lekker gepicknickt langs de over.

De tweede keer dat bij Essoyes aandeden was is de zomer en was er feest in het dorp. Dat gebeurd wel meer in de zomer in Frankrijk maar dit keer was het toch een beetje anders. Naast de gebruikelijke ingrediënten zoals een feesttent met veel muziek en een berg goed eten waren was dit aangevuld met veel Champagne en veel producten van allerlei kunstzinnige typjes. Want hoewel het een dikke eeuw geleden is dat Renoir hier woonde is het dorp nooit meer van de kunstenaars afgekomen. Spijtig genoeg was geen enkel zo getalenteerd als die eerste, maar dat mag een bezoek aan Essoyes niet afschrikken. Het is mooi zat en je kan altijd vluchten in een glas met bubbels.
