Beynac-et-Cazenac is gebouwd op één van de mooiste kliffen langs de Dordogne en alleen daarom is dit dorp al een bezoek waard. Het kasteel torent hoog boven alle gebouwen uit en domineert nog altijd deze strategische plek. Militair stelt het natuurlijk niets meer voor maar op foto’s en ansichtkaarten regeert het nog altijd met harde hand.

De bekende groene reisgids uit Frankrijk geeft het twee sterren en dat is veel voor een dorp. Het roemt met name het kasteel en het archeologische park dat zich op loopafstand van het dorp ligt. En dat is dan naast het mooie dorp met zijn gezellige straatjes en prachtig uitzicht op de Dordogne.
Wij zijn een paar keer een week in de buurt van de Dordogne geweest en het is een heerlijke omgeving om vakantie te vieren. Het klimaat is uitstekend, je hebt er veel grotten, een schitterend landschap, goed eten, er is genoeg te doen en natuurlijk mooie dorpen.

We hebben veel dorpjes bezocht maar Beynac-et-Cazenac hebben wij eigenlijk niet goed bekeken want we zijn er alleen doorheen gereden én langs gevaren met een kano. We zijn er dus wel geweest maar we hebben het dorp niet goed bezocht. Daarom geef ik dit dorp ook geen sterren want ik kan het niet goed beoordelen al had ik wel de indruk dat het heel bijzonder is. Maar om het goed te kunnen beoordelen moet moet ik er nog een keer heen en dat lijkt mij geen straf.
Prehistorie
De Dordogne is één van de plekken in West-Europa die al aan de einde van de ijstijd door mensen werd bewoond. Langs de oever van de rivier is er ook veel gevonden van deze vroege bewoners waarbij Lascaux de bekendste is. Ook in de buurt van Beynac-et-Cazenac zijn resten gevonden die wijzen op al een lange bebouwing. Ze hebben hier een archeologische park gebouwd waarin wordt uitgelegd hoe de mensen hier leefden tussen grofweg de laatste ijstijd en de komst van de Kelten, die wij kennen als Galliërs. Het park is in de zomer elke dag open en ze spreken er Engels. Na het hoogseizoen moet je een afspraak maken.
De andere publiekstrekker is natuurlijk het kasteel. Om daar te komen loop je door het dorpje waar je via een steil straatje de burcht bereikt. Het verdedigingswerk is op 150 meter hoge rots boven de Dordogne gebouwd en heeft in de tweede helft van de middeleeuwen een flink aantal belegeringen doorstaan waarbij de aanvallers werden bestookt met stenen.
Richard Leeuwenhart
Dit was niet altijd succesvol. Zo veroverde de beroemde Engelse koning Richard Leeuwenhart in de twaalfde eeuw het kasteel. Dat is geen schande want hij was een getalenteerd militair. Een eeuw later werd het kasteel van Beynac-et-Cazenac door het kruisridders uit het noorden veroverd op de Albigenzen waarbij behoorlijk wat bloed vloeide.
Naast de militaire functie heeft het kasteel ook een bestuurlijke functie gehad. Zo vergaderden de baronnen van de Perigord er en woonde één van hen hier. Na de Franse Revolutie waren er echter weinig edelen over in Frankrijk en werd het kasteel verlaten en raakte het in verval.
Restauratie kasteel
In tweede helft van de twintigste eeuw werd het gekocht door een particulier die het langzaam maar zeker heeft gerestaureerd zodat wij er nu van kunnen genieten. Het heeft interessante vertrekken waarvan er een aantal alleen zijn aangelicht met olielampen zoals dat ook in de middeleeuwen gebeurde. Tot slot is er het uitzicht over de rivier en de rotsen van de Domme en kan je bij helder weer drie andere kastelen zien.
In en rond het dorp is veel te doen. Zoals ik al eerder schreef is een kanotocht over de Dordogne echt een must. Al is er geen opstap plek in Beynac-et-Cazenac, daarvoor moet je westelijker wezen. Verwacht niet een tocht op wild water want de rivier is hier kalm en rustig. Wie echt iets bijzonders wil doen kan een ballontocht maken boven het dorp maar dat is wel redelijk prijzig.
