Even ten westen van Parijs in een bocht van de rivier de Seine ligt La Roche-Guyon. Het gezicht van het dorp wordt gedomineerd door een groot kasteel waarvan het bovenste gedeelte in de twaalfde eeuw is gebouwd. Deze plek langs de Seine heeft steile hellingen en dat maakt het een mooi plaatje. La Roche-Guyon is dan ook sinds de negentiende eeuw een geliefde plek dat veel bekende kunstenaars trok.

Het dorp ligt precies op de historische grens tussen het hertog van Normandië en het Ile de France. Al in de Romeinse tijd woonden hier al mensen in een villa. Dat was meer dan wat we tegenwoordig onder een villa verstaan, denk aan een kruising tussen een grote boerderij en een dorp.

Kasteel
Na de val van het Romeinse rijk bleef door de strategische ligging La Roche-Guyon een belangrijke plek. Dat gaat gepaard met mythologische gebeurtenissen van allerlei lokale helden en heiligen. Mooie verhalen maar wat we zeker weten is dat in de elfde eeuw een kasteel is gebouwd op de hoge krijtrotsen boven de rivier om het koninklijk gebied rond Parijs te verdedigen. Kennelijk was dat nodig in die tijd.
Een eeuw later wordt het kasteel grondig verbouwd en daarbij wordt er iets opmerkelijks gedaan. In de rots waar het kasteel staat wordt vanaf het dorp een tunnel naar de burcht gegraven. Deze tunnel bestaat nog en brengt je in 250 treden naar de kerkers van het kasteel. Zeker even kijken als je er bent.
In de loop der eeuwen gaat het kasteel, het dorp en het recht om tol te heffen op schepen op de Seine over van verschillende aanzienlijke adellijke families. Tijdens de achttiende eeuw wordt onder de rots stapje voor stapje een nieuw kasteel gebouwd. Als je goed kijkt zie je duidelijk de verschillende stijlen van de gebouwen. De minder bedeelde mensen van het dorp hakken in rotsen woning uit en die zijn er ook nog. Het dorp wordt in deze tijd een belangrijk knooppunt van handel en dat trekt steeds meer mensen. Het centrum moet een gezellige boel zijn geweest met kroegen en herbergen.
In de negentiende eeuw krijgt La Roche-Guyon te maken met krimp. Hoewel de bevolking halveert verdwijnen de handel en de kleine ambachten niet en dat zorgt voor leven in de brouwerij. Er wordt geprobeerd wijn te verbouwen langs de oever van de Seine. Ondanks de kalkgrond, dat goed is voor de druiven wordt het geen succes en verdwijnen de wijngaarden na verloop van tijd. Kennelijk was het spul niet te zuipen.
Hugo en impressionisten
Victor Hugo verblijft in deze tijd twee keer in het kasteel. Hij vindt het somber, verlaten en desolaat en als goed romanticus is dat in zijn ogen prachtig. Hij schrijft er aan zijn dochter over. Hij is niet de laatste kunstenaar die het dorp bezoekt.
In het tweede deel van de twintigste eeuw wordt het dorp zelfs populair bij de impressionisten. Monet, Renoir, Degas, Pissarro zijn vaak te vinden in de straatjes en vinden inspiratie in het landschap. Er zijn dan ook flink wat schilderijen gemaakt in en rondom het dorp. De reden van deze populariteit is dat de eigenaar van de stamkroeg van de kunstenaars in Parijs oorspronkelijk uit dit dorp kwam.
Erwin Rommel
Het dorp duikt in de twintigste eeuw nog even op in de wereldgeschiedenis als de Duitse Generaal Rommel in 1944 het kasteel zijn hoofdkwartier maakt. Zijn voornaamste taak was het tegenhouden van de Engelsen en Amerikanen die een aanval voorbereiden. Tijdens D-Day was Herr Rommel echter niet op zijn werkplek te vinden maar onderweg naar zijn jarige vrouw. Hij had een nieuw paar schoenen voor haar gekocht.
Op deze plek moet de beroemde generaal contact met de groep rond Von Stauffenberg hebben gehad over een complot tegen Hitler. Deze mislukte echter jammerlijk en dat kostte Rommel uiteindelijk zijn leven. Dankzij zijn populariteit onder het volk mocht hij de hand aan zichzelf slaan.
Tot slot is het gemeentehuis en de overdekte markt nog even een bezoekje waard. Deze zijn gebouwd in de negentiende eeuw en zeker een bezoekje waard.
