Ile de France is de streek rond Parijs en vormt het hart van Frankrijk. Omdat Parijs alles behalve een dorp is gaan we op deze site niet verder in op de hoofdstad, daar is al genoeg over geschreven. Maar in de streek rondom Parijs zijn voldoende mooie en interessante dingen te beleven. Vanuit deze streek wist de Franse koning zijn wil op te leggen. Het is dan ook het bestuurlijke centrum van Frankrijk maar is daarnaast ook het culturele centrum van de natie en één van de belangrijkste van Europa.  Lees verder Ile de France: het hart van Frankrijk →

Het kasteel van Fontainebleau ligt ten zuidoosten van Parijs en behoort samen met Vaux-le-Vicomte, Chambord en natuurlijk Versailles tot de grote kastelen van Frankrijk. De Franse koning Frans I liet in de zestiende eeuw het kasteel flink verbouwen en gebruikte het vaak voor feesten en partijen. Later, in het begin van de negentiende eeuw, vestigde Napoleon zich in Fontainebleau, als hij tenminste niet op veldtocht was. Nu staat er een enorm kasteel met indrukwekkend veel details waar het ontbreken van grote aantal bezoekers opvallend is.

Het kasteel van Lodewijk XIV in Versailles is één van de meest indrukwekkende gebouwen die ik ken. Het is niet alleen enorm qua afmetingen maar is ook nog eens mooi en smaakvol ontworpen en op een heel hoog niveau uitgevoerd en dat is een combinatie die je niet vaak tegenkomt. Dat is ook de voornaamste reden om het kasteel van binnen te bekijken. Daarvoor moet je je wel door de hordes toeristen worstelen maar dat is het zeker waard. Even ten westen van Parijs ligt Auvers-sur-Oise. Een heerlijk stadje met een een Hotel de Ville, een paar cafés, een kleine Carrefour Contact en een station van de SNCF. Dat laatste maakt het dorp net even wat bijzonderder dan andere dorpen op en rond het plateau van Vixem en het station heeft er voor gezorgd dat dit dorp met hoofdletters is geschreven in de kunstgeschiedenis. Hier beleefde de grootste kunstenaar van Nederland zijn laatste gelukkige maanden voordat hij zelfmoord pleegde.

Even ten westen van Parijs in een bocht van de rivier de Seine ligt La Roche-Guyon. Het gezicht van het dorp wordt gedomineerd door een groot kasteel waarvan het bovenste gedeelte in de twaalfde eeuw is gebouwd. Deze plek langs de Seine heeft steile hellingen en dat maakt het een mooi plaatje. La Roche-Guyon is dan ook sinds de negentiende eeuw een geliefde plek dat veel bekende kunstenaars trok.
