Rochechouart is een kleine stoere stad gelegen in het Franse departement de Haute-Vienne. Elke keer als ik deze stad binnen rij beneemt mij de blik op het chateau dat hoog boven de omgeving uittorent de adem. De twee torens zijn dominant aanwezig, schapen grazen op de heuvel onder het kasteel en de rustig kabbelende rivier maakt het plaatje compleet.

De ophaalbrug is de perfecte start voor een wandeling rondom het chateau waardoor je een uitstekend beeld van de omgeving en de stad Rochechouart krijgt. Het prachtige gerenoveerde vijftiende-eeuwse kasteel dient nu als museum voor moderne kunst. Naast moderne kunst vind je binnen met zorg gerestaureerde muurschilderingen die je terug brengen naar de tijd van Richard Lionheart en de belangrijke positie die het kasteel heeft gespeeld tijdens de honderdjarige oorlog tussen Engeland en Frankrijk.

Als onderdeel van de Limousin, het prachtige en waterrijke groen glooiende landschap in het hart van Frankrijk, heeft Rochechouart een bijzondere plek in de ontstaansgeschiedenis van dit gebied, een geschiedenis die miljoenen jaren teruggaat. Het voelt altijd magisch om mij dit te realiseren als ik deze stad bezoek maar er is nog meer dan alleen het stadje en het kasteel.

Lana woont sinds 2014 samen met haar twee jongens en partner midden in de Haute-Vienne. Op haar blog hetfranseleven.nl deelt zij persoonlijke verhalen over alles wat erbij komt kijken als je met een gezin emigreert. Zo’n 214 miljoen jaar gelden viel er in het westen van Frankrijk een enorme meteoriet uit de hemel en hoewel we nog steeds niet weten wat er precies is gebeurd heeft dit het gebied en haar bewoners voor altijd beïnvloed. De enorme klap van de landing was zo groot dat het steen in de grond smolt en weer nieuwe gesteente vormde. 

De inslag heeft de streek in een doorsnede van vele kilometers herschapen en Rochechoaurt ligt op de rand van dit inslaggebied. Espace Meteorite is een klein museum gevestigd in de hoofdstraat waar het verhaal van de inslag wordt verteld. Zo kwam ik er hier achter dat veel gebouwen zijn opgebouwd uit lokaal gedolven gesteente en wie goed kijkt kan in sommigen daarvan nog meteorietgesteente terugvinden. Een ontzettend leuk en leerzaam museum voor jong en oud en als je dit bezocht hebt zal je Rochechouart met haar bijzondere geografische geschiedenis niet snel meer vergeten.

Wie na het bezoeken van het chateau Rochechouart en l’Espace Meteoriet honger heeft gekregen kan in Hotel De France gelegen vlak naast het postkantoor, heerlijk traditioneel lunchen. Je bevindt je tussen de lokale bevolking met vriendelijke bediening, een gezellige plek om bij te komen en lekker te kunnen eten. Natuurlijk is er bij de tegenovergelegen bakker, er zijn er meerdere te vinden in Rochechouart, ook heerlijk traditioneel brood of gebak te vinden en serveren ze er ook koffie maar voor een stevige hap is Hotel De France een echte aanrader.

Gedraaide kerktoren

De plaatselijke kerk is natuurlijk altijd de moeite waard om even te bekijken en dat geldt ook voor de Eglise Saint-Sauveur de Rochechouart. Deze negentiende-eeuwse Kerk valt op door haar gedraaide toren. Er zijn meerdere van deze gedraaide kerktorens in Frankrijk en er gaan verschillende verhalen de ronde over het waarom van de draai in de torens. Even langs lopen en de toren bekijken zou ik zeggen.

Rochechouart is een stad, een stoer dorp waarin vele bijzonderheden over de geschiedenis van Frankrijk, de geografische ontwikkeling van haar omgeving, de veelzijdigheid van de lokale bevolking en de bijzondere kanten van de Franse architectuur, samenkomen. Een plek om zeker te bezoeken en die niet snel zal vervelen, een bijzondere plek die kan blijven hangen in het geheugen met de wens er weer eens naar terug te willen keren.

Op de heuvel naast het chateau ligt een groot stuk gesteente; Roc du Boeuf. Zo vernoemd omdat het gesteente doet denken aan een os rustend in het landschap. De legende gaat dat bij het luiden van de kasteelbel iedere keer de grond onder dit gesteente trilde, alsof de os in beweging kwam. Tot er op een zekere dag een grote storm de klokkentoren van het chateau heeft doen instorten de bel de heuvel is afgerold en het gesteente zich daarna nooit meer heeft bewogen. Het chateau heeft geen klokkentoren meer maar de rustende os is nog altijd te zien.
