Mortemart ligt in de Limousin aan de voet van de Monts Blond en is eigenlijk een dorp waar je zo doorheen rijdt. Dat deden wij ook bijna, maar ik wist toch de rem op tijd te vinden. Het dorp heeft een bewogen geschiedenis waar niet heel veel meer van te vinden is. De kerk is nog wel de moeite waard.

Mortemart ligt onopvallend in de Limousin. Mortemart heeft een lange geschiedenis en het dorp vormde de basis van het geslacht de Mortemart waarvan Madame de Montespan de meest bekende is. Zij was de maitresse van Lodewijk XIV, maar ja welke leuke dame was dat niet in die tijd.

In de Middeleeuwen lag het dorp in de Limousin lang in de frontlijn van de Honderdjarige oorlog. De Engelse koning vond dat hij recht had op de Franse troon, maar de Franse koning dacht daar toch anders over. Gevolg was een oorlog die maar liefst honderd jaar zou duren. De Engelse koning had het zuidwesten van Frankrijk stevig in handen, terwijl de machtsbasis van de Franse vorst Parijs en omgeving was. Logisch dat de gevechten vaak in de Limousin plaatsvonden.

Voor wie er oog voor heeft, zijn de gevolgen van dit geweld na zeshonderd jaar nog altijd te zien. Of eigenlijk niet te zien. In Mortemart stond ooit een machtig kasteel die de omgeving beheerste. Die is er nu niet meer al kan je in het dorp nog altijd de resten van de burcht zien.

Klooster en kerk

Opvallend voor zo’n klein dorp is de aanwezigheid van twee kloosters. Het augustijnenklooster stamt uit de veertiende eeuw en ligt naast de kerk. Helaas is het klooster niet te bezichtigen. De kerk wel en die is een bezoek waard. De klokkentoren is opvallend met zijn vreemde spits. Binnen vind je een mooi altaar uit de barok. Bijzonder zijn de koorbanken die zijn uitgevoerd met een puik kunstje houtsnijwerk. Dat is altijd mooi om even goed te bekijken. Tegenover de weg staat een karmelietenklooster. Leuk is dat je hier kan overnachten.

Het dorp heeft verder fraaie huizen die zijn opgetrokken uit graniet. Op het dorpsplein staat een grote houten overkapping waar vroeger de markt onder werd gehouden. Daarnaast een terras waar je rustig het kalme dorpsleven kan observeren onder het genot van een gekoeld glas rosé, geen slecht idee natuurlijk.

Met Mortemart is niet zoveel mis, maar een bezoek aan dit dorp zal zeker niet je hele leven bij je blijven. Naast de twee kloosters en de kerk is het niet echt bijzonder en ook het landschap is niet spectaculair hoewel de natuur wel uitnodigt voor een antwoord. Als je in de buurt bent kan je je er een uurtje vermaken, maar het is geen omweg waard.
