Op een steenworp van het viaduct van Milau ligt Peyre. Het dorp is op een bijna onmogelijk plek gebouwd op de steile hellingen naast de rivier de Tarn. De huizen lijken aan de bergwand  als zwaluwnesten geplakt en je vraagt je af waarom ze niet in het water donderen.

Peyre is zeer klein maar toch redelijk spectaculair. De grote aandachtstrekker is natuurlijk het viaduct van Milau waarop je vanuit het dorp een prachtig uitzicht hebt. Ben je uitgekeken dan biedt het groene water van de rivier de Tarn ook een prachtig uitzicht waar zo nu en dan een treintje voorbij komt rijden.

Het nu slaperige dorp was aan het einde van de middeleeuwen de hoofdstad van de streek. Tijdens de godsdienstoorlogen van de zestiende eeuw werd het compleet verwoest en geplunderd. Het dorp werd daarna herbouwd en uit die tijd is ook het kasteel dat in Lodewijk XIV is opgetrokken.

Net als de meeste gebouwen in Peyre zijn voor de helft in de rotsen gebouwd. Dit geldt ook voor de kerk die een gewone gevel heeft maar voor de rest eigenlijk een grot is. Dezelfde manier van bouwen zie je ook bij de kerken in Rocamadour.
