De Fransman is iemand van tradities, vastgeroeste gewoontes, gebruiken, rituelen die ze niet snel of misschien nooit zullen veranderen. Eén van die vaste tradities is het Franse dorpsfeest. Ieder dorp, maar dan ook ieder dorp heeft één keer per jaar zijn dorpsfeest, meestal gehouden in juli en augustus. Je kunt het een beetje vergelijken met kermis taferelen in Nederland. Het feest begint meestal vrijdag ‘s avonds en eindigt zondag in de kleine uurtjes.

Kaas is misschien wel het bekendste Franse voedsel en het behoort samen met wijn, de baguette en de croissant tot de culinaire monumenten van Frankrijk. Waar het brood vooral een nationaal symbool is gaan kaas en wijn veel verder en vormt het ook een belangrijk onderdeel van de identiteit van de regio’s. Iedere streek heeft zijn eigen kaas waarvan ieder dorp weer zijn eigen variant maakt. Heerlijk natuurlijk!

Maar er zijn kazen die boven de streek uitstijgen zoals de Brie, de Camembert en natuurlijk de keizer der kazen; de Roquefort. Hoe wordt deze wereldberoemde schapenkaas gemaakt? Hoe is hij ontstaan en kan je als kaasgek de productie bekijken? Kees Wynen woonde jaren naast het beroemde kaasdorp en geeft de antwoorden op deze vragen.

Saint-Côme-d’Olt ligt op de oevers van de rivier de Lot en langs de pelgrimsroute naar Santiago de Compostella. Het meest in het opvallende aan het dorp is de torenspits van de kerk die vreemd gedraaid is. Je denkt even dat er iets niet goed is gegaan tijdens de bouw maar het is gewoon zo bedoeld. Dit soort rariteiten zie je maar weinig in Frankrijk.

Estaing ligt waar de rivier Coussane uitmondt in de Lot. De grote rivier slingert zich om het dorp heen waardoor het aan drie kanten water heeft. Dat is strategisch een goede positie want je hoeft alleen de kant waar geen water is te verdedigen en daar staat dan ook een flink kasteel. Het dorp heeft naast het kasteel vanzelfsprekend een kerk en een gezellig centrum met mooi uitzicht over de Lot en de oude brug.

Sainte-Eulalie-d’Olt ligt op de rechteroever van de rivier De Lot. Het dorp is gebouwd rondom het kerkplein waardoor een stratenplan van cirkels is ontstaan. De kerk is een prachtig voorbeeld van de Romaanse bouwkunst met interessante gotische details.

Brousse-le-Château ligt op de plek waar de rivier Alrance samenkomt met de Tarn. Het dorp heeft zijn bestaan ook te danken aan deze strategische ligging want dit is één van de weinige plekken waar je de rivieren kon oversteken. In de tweede helft van de middeleeuwen werd er tol geheven.

Op een steenworp van het viaduct van Milau ligt Peyre. Het dorp is op een bijna onmogelijk plek gebouwd op de steile hellingen naast de rivier de Tarn. De huizen lijken aan de bergwand  als zwaluwnesten geplakt en je vraagt je af waarom ze niet in het water donderen.

Belcastel ligt niet ver van Najac en lijkt ook veel op dit andere dorp langs de rivier de Aveyron. Het is er allemaal wat rustiger en gemoedelijker hier want de toeristenindustrie heeft zich hier wat minder ontwikkeld. Net als Najac heeft Belcastel ook een kasteel dat hoog boven het dorp toornt, en net als in Najac is dit gebouw ook niet helemaal heel meer.

Najac ligt aan de oevers van de Aveyron en is exact het Franse dorpje zoals je die voorstelt, alleen een beetje groter misschien. Gebouwd op een steile over boven een slingerende rivier en de ruïne van een middeleeuwse burcht. Dit is ook opgemerkt door de toeristenindustrie waardoor het dorp redelijk druk begint te worden.

In La Couvertoirade waan je jezelf in de middeleeuwen. Het geheel ommuurde dorp is totaal autovrij en heeft zeer sfeervolle nauwe straatjes en prachtige monumenten. Wat mij het meest is bijgebleven, is het kleine kerkje met kerkhof met Tempeliersgraven.
