La Romieu ligt in het zuidwesten van Frankrijk tussen Auch en Agen in de Midi-Pyrénées op de pelgrimsroute naar Santiago de Compostela. Het dorp wordt gedomineerd door de grote kerk die in de veertiende eeuw is gebouwd maar heeft ook prachtig dorpsplein met arcaden die karakteristiek zijn voor dit deel van Frankrijk. Net buiten het dorp is een botanische tuin waar je heerlijk kunt wandelen. La Romieu is sinds 2018 een ‘Plus Beaux Village de France’.

De geschiedenis van La Romieu, dat pelgrim betekent in de oude lokale taal, begint in de elfde eeuw en kent in de eerste helft van de veertiende eeuw een bloeiperiode. Eén van de inwoners van het dorp is een volle neef van paus Clemens V die op dat moment in Avignon zetelde. Deze Arnaud d’Aux maakte carrière in de kerk en schopt het tot kardinaal en dient als kamerheer van de Paus.

Deze Arnaud bouwt in La Romieu een kerkcomplex dat er nu nog altijd staat. Naast de kerk verschijnt er ook een groot paleis en laat hij het hele dorp ommuren. Deze laatste twee zijn inmiddels verdwenen maar de kerk staat er nog. In de kerk zijn fresco’s uit die tijd en een kloostergang te bewonderen. De flinke toren is achthoekig en is voor een deel te beklimmen waardoor je een prachtig uitzicht hebt over het dorp en het fraaie plein met arcaden.

De kerk speelde een grote rol in de ontwikkeling van La Romieu als pleisterplaats op de Camino de Santiago, een plegrimstocht die in de middeleeuwen zeer populair was. Het hele complex staat op de UNESCO lijst en geldt dus als werelderfgoed.

Legende van de katten

Wie door La Romieu loopt kan bijna niet om de katten heen. Afbeeldingen, namen, uithangbordjes en beelden; overal kom je deze eigenzinnige dieren tegen. Veel beeldjes zijn van de hand van Maurice Serreau die zich liet inspireren door een plaatselijke legende. En dat is een leuk verhaal.

De aanbidding van poezen in het dorp gaat terug naar een verhaal aan het einde van de middeleeuwen. Tijdens een hongersnood door een misoogst werd de jacht geopend op deze huisdieren om die vervolgens op te eten, als je honger hebt doe je alles.

Eén inwoonster van het dorp, Angelina genaamd, hield veel van katten en verborg er een aantal. Dat bleek een gouden greep want na de hongersnood werd de oogst opnieuw bedreigd. Dit keer door een plaag knaagdieren die vrij spel hadden bij een gebrek aan katten. De ondergedoken poezen kwamen in actie en maakten korte metten met de muizen, ratten en ander ongedierte. Na deze heldendaad konden de katten niet meer stuk en worden sindsdien vereerd als helden. De poezen vonden het waarschijnlijk wel best en gingen slapen.

Het verhaal is opvallend want in het algemeen wantrouwden middeleeuwers katten. De dieren werden geassocieerd met duistere krachten en de duivel. Een echo hiervan is het idee dat een zwarte kat ongeluk zouden geven.

Botanische tuin

Even buiten het dorp ligt Jardins de Coursiana. Deze botanische tuin is opricht in 1974 en heeft sindsdien een enorme hoeveelheid verschillende bomen verzameld. De tuin omvat vier gedeeltes met elk hun eigen thema. Zo is er bijvoorbeeld een Engelse en een kruidentuin.

Als je zowel de tuin als het kerk wilt bezoeken kan je het best een gecombineerd kaartje kopen, die is het hele seizoen geldig.
