Nu is Barfleur een klein dorpje, maar de in verhouding grote haven verraadt dat het dorp in het verleden belangrijk was. In de Middeleeuwen was Barfleur één van de belangrijkste havens aan het kanaal en kende het een bloeiperiode. Zo werd bijvoorbeeld het schip waarmee 1066 Willem de Veroveraar naar Engeland voer om daar de boel te veroveren werd hier gebouwd. Later werd er nog een zeeslag uitgevochten tussen Frankrijk tegen een Engelse en Nederlandse coalitie, die werd gewonnen door de Fransen.

Tegenwoordig is het allemaal veel rustiger en kan je er heerlijk wandelen over de kade en de vissersschepen zien aankomen. Wij bezochten de kleinste gemeente van het departement Manche in de meivakantie bij heerlijk fris lenteweer met een zonnetje die door de wolken probeerde te breken. Het dorpje vormde de tweede tussenstop van een autotocht langs de noordwestelijke westelijke kust van het schiereiland Contentin.

Vikingen

De geschiedenis van Barfleur gaat terug naar de diepe Middeleeuwen. De naam herinnert aan de Vikingen die Normandië van de koning van Frankrijk als leen kregen. Barfleur is een verbastering van de oud-Noorse woorden van kreek en hoek. Vikingen waren natuurlijk zeevaarders en maakten van Barfleur één van hun belangrijkste havens.

In de elfde eeuw speelde de haven een belangrijke rol bij de bevoorrading van het leger van Willem de Veroveraar dat het kanaal overtrok om Engeland te veroveren. De Engelsen roepen nog steeds dat dit de laatste keer was dat het eiland werd veroverd door een leger van het Europese vaste land. Dat valt te betwijfelen want de Nederlandse stadhouder Willem III landde in 1688 ook in Engeland om zich een paar maanden later zich tot koning van Engeland te laten kronen. Volgens de Engelsen kwam hij op uitnodiging, daarbij wordt maar even voorbij gegaan aan het feit dat hij ruim twintigduizend soldaten bij zich had.

Aan het einde van Middeleeuwen tijdens de Honderdjarige oorlog de haven verwoest en daarmee verloor Barfleur zijn dominante positie. De kerk staat op een natuurlijke pier en het is nauwelijks voor te stellen dat hij in de Middeleeuwen in het centrum van het dorp stond. Het dorp was sowieso de grote haven kwijtgeraakt want de zee rukt langzaam maar zeker op.

Eb en vloed

De zee is hier rondom Contentin bijzonder. In tegenstelling tot onze Noordzee is het water niet troebel zodat je hier mooi kan duiken. Daarbij is het wel oppassen want het verschil tussen eb en vloed is vrij groot. Bij laag water loopt de huidige haventje bijna helemaal leeg zodat de bootjes droogvallen. Dat doet weer denken aan onze Waddenzee.

Het eerder genoemde kerkje is anders dan je gewend bent. Hij is gewijd aan Sinterklaas, een vrij populaire heilige in havensteden omdat hij ooit een storm zou hebben weggebeden. De plattegrond is vierkanter dan je gewend, de buitenkant is vrij plomp en niet echt elegant. Het ontbreken van een torenspits en de dikke muren geeft de kerk bijna het uiterlijk van een burcht. Binnen is het donker en somber maar er staan mooie houten beelden en zijn aardige glas-in-loodramen te zien.

Naast de kerk bevindt zich de Office du Tourisme waar een smalle steeg loopt die achter de kerk loopt. Dit pad brengt je naar een klein terras waar je een prachtig uitzicht hebt over de zee en de kust met de Phare de Gatteville, de tweede hoogste vuurtoren van Frankrijk. Deze kan je beklimmen, maar dat hebben wij maar even niet gedaan.

Naast de Office du Toerisme staat een aardig gebouw van de reddingsdienst met een lange helling naar het water. Deze plek zorgde bij ons nog voor een aardige familiecrisis omdat onze kinderen hadden bedacht dat hun nieuwe schoenen waterdicht zouden zijn en besloten dit even in het zeewater te testen. Dit tot ongenoegen van de ouders. Toch is het leuk om even af te dalen van de helling want tussen de rotsen heb je een mooi uitzicht op de ingang van het haventje. Om de eerder genoemde Willem de Veroveraar te herdenken hebben de dorpelingen een soort van enorme medaille op een rots geplakt, en die kan je onderaan de helling ook goed zien. Wel even oppassen op natte voeten, daar krijg je boze ouders van.

Het spreekt voor zich dat je hier uitstekend vis kan eten in één van de restaurants die je in de haven vindt. Daarbij heb je grote kans dat je je diner aan land gebracht ziet worden want in het vissershaventje is het een komen en gaan van bootjes. Het dorp staat bekend om zijn ‘blondes’, een mossel die langs de kust wordt gevangen op natuurlijke bedden. Daarnaast kan je hier ook natuurlijk ook uitstekend oesters eten.
