Porquerolles is de grootste van de Îles d’Hyères, een eilandengroep heeft als bijnaam de Îles d’Or, ofwel de gouden eilanden gelegen even ten zuiden van Hyères in de Middellandse Zee. Dat is klinkt nogal pretentieus maar we hebben het hier wel over de Côte d’Azur waar alles een beetje overdreven is én laten we eerlijk zijn, ook vaak heel mooi. Porquerolles is dat zeker ook. Honfleur is een mooi stadje aan monding van de Seine en ligt tegenover Le Havre dat aan het andere kant van het water ligt. Het stadje, of dorp, is beroemd om zijn prachtige oude haven en gezellige straatjes en pleintjes. Het is een populaire bestemming, misschien een beetje te populair.

Ploumanac’h ligt aan de noordelijke kust van Bretagne op een eigen schiereiland en is beroemd om zijn roze rotsen. Deze zijn het best te zien direct langs de kustlijn dat hier uitermate grillig verloopt. Het dorpje Saint-Guirec is een gezellige mix van haven en strand. Het heidelandschap direct achter de kust maakt dit paradijsje voor wandelaars compleet.

Tussen het D-Day geweld op het schiereiland Cotentin is het makkelijk om de andere mooie en interessante plekken over het hoofd te zien. Het vissersdorp Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue met zijn mooie baai en oude forten is daar een goed voorbeeld van. Het ligt op half uur rijden van Utah-Beach en werd in 2019 door de Fransen zelf gekozen tot mooiste dorp van het jaar.

Vlakbij de Middellandse Zee tussen Montpellier en de Camargue ligt de prachtige vestingstad Aigues-Mortes. De stad is in de middeleeuwen gebouwd is verbazingwekkend goed bewaard gebleven en trekt nu veel toeristen. Deze worden getrokken door de prachtige muren en de historische gebouwen en de gezellige sfeer op en rondom de pleinen.

Vlak onder Saint Malo en in de buurt van Mont Saint Michel ligt het oude vissersdorp Saint Suliac. De huizen zijn voor een groot deel gebouwd van graniet en staan in nauwe straatjes die in het seizoen vol staan met bloemen. Het dorp heeft een eeuwenoud klooster dat meerdere keren is herbouwd. Helaas voor ons is dat niet helemaal succesvol geweest, want nu rest er nog alleen een ruïne, wat ook weer zijn charme heeft natuurlijk.

Limeuil ligt waar de rivier de Vézère uitmondt in de Dordogne in de Perigord. Het dorp is misschien één van de oudst nu nog bewoonde plek in Frankrijk want hier zijn spulletjes gevonden van mensen die aan het einde van de laatste ijstijd op rendieren en mammoeten jaagden. Dat moet een stevige barbecue zijn geweest. Daar is tegenwoordig niet veel meer van te zien maar dat gelukkig is er nog genoeg te beleven.

Het dorp ligt in de streek Perigord Poupre dat zo is genoemd naar de bladeren van de wijnranken die in de herfst paars kleuren. Lees verder Limeuil: dorp langs twee rivieren **** →

Het blauwe water van het meer, de achtergrond met bergen en de charme van een oud middeleeuws dorp, dat zijn de ingrediënten van Yvoire, een dorp aan het meer van Genève in de Savoie. Dat klinkt allemaal te goed om waar te zijn maar geloof mij, als je door Yvoire loopt is het allemaal nog veel mooier. Dit is een topdorp; vijf sterren!

Nu is Barfleur een klein dorpje, maar de in verhouding grote haven verraadt dat het dorp in het verleden belangrijk was. In de Middeleeuwen was Barfleur één van de belangrijkste havens aan het kanaal en kende het een bloeiperiode. Zo werd bijvoorbeeld het schip waarmee 1066 Willem de Veroveraar naar Engeland voer om daar de boel te veroveren werd hier gebouwd. Later werd er nog een zeeslag uitgevochten tussen Frankrijk tegen een Engelse en Nederlandse coalitie, die werd gewonnen door de Fransen.
