En het is waar, in Frankrijk staan heel veel kastelen, van bouwvallen uit de tiende eeuw tot negentiende-eeuwse luxueuze lustoorden. Het bekendste kastelengebied is de Loire. Hier staan niet alleen heel veel kastelen, maar ook de mooiste die je in Frankrijk kan vinden.

Officieel is de Loire geen gebied maar een rivier. Het is met een lengte van meer dan 1.000 kilometer de langste van Frankrijk en hij loopt vanaf de Alpen naar de kust bij Nantes. Maar als je het over de streek De Loire hebt, dan heb je het waarschijnlijk over het gebied tussen Orleans en Angers. In deze streek zijn in de vijftiende en zestiende eeuw een enorm aantal kastelen gebouwd.

Deze gebouwen zijn bijzonder, omdat ze een ander doel hebben dan hun voorgangers. De kastelen werden namelijk niet gebouwd om je in te verschuilen als er een boze buurman met zijn huurlegertje aan kwam marcheren, maar met het idee om er in te wonen, ervan te genieten en vooral om je collega edelen te laten zien hoe beschaafd je was en hoeveel smaak je wel niet had. Met andere woorden, het kasteel was het verlengstuk van de edele delen van de adel uit het Frankrijk in de vijftiende en zestiende eeuw.

Koning vertrekt naar Blois

Het was in eerste instantie de Franse koning die het wel leuk vond om te wonen aan de Loire. Parijs was toen al één van de grootste steden van Europa en dat moet een behoorlijke stinkboel zijn geweest. Daarbij had de stad zich in het verleden al een aantal keer tegen de monarch gekeerd.

Geen omgeving voor een koning en hij liet al snel zijn oog vallen op Blois en omgeving. Een prachtige streek waar je nog lekker kon genieten en waar al enkele mooie kastelen stonden. De hofhouding bleek al snel te groot en daarom moesten de accommodaties worden uitgebreid. Om dicht bij de koning te zijn, lieten de belangrijkste edelen van het hof in de buurt ook een optrekje bouwen.

Het gevolg is dat het gebied vol staat met kastelen waarvan ook nog eens de kunsthistorische waarde ongekend is. Als je de jaartallen een beetje in je hoofd hebt, weet je dat deze tijd als de Renaissance bekend staat. Vanuit Noord-Italië verspreidde de nieuwe ideeën over wetenschap en kunst zich naar Frankrijk waar koning Frans I deze omarmde. Aangezien Frankrijk in deze tijd een economische grootmacht was, werd het hét toonaangevende land in Europa. De streek rond Blois was ‘the place to be’, te vergelijken met Berlijn of Ibiza op dit moment. Rond het hof van de Franse koning verzamelden zich beroemde kunstenaars zoals Leonardo da Vinci, die hier ook begraven ligt.

In de zeventiende eeuw was het uit met de pret langs de Loire. Lodewijk XIV was inmiddels koning geworden en die vond de hele streek maar niets. Hij liet in Versailles een kasteel bouwen die de kastelen aan de Loire degradeerde tot niet meer dan aardige vakantiehuizen. Met Lodewijk verdwenen ook de hoge edelen uit de streek en daarmee ook de bouwwoede die daar twee eeuwen heeft geheerst.

Gelukkig staan de meeste kastelen uit die tijd er nog, waarvan de belangrijkste te bezoeken zijn. De koning van deze kastelen is ongetwijfeld Chambord. Dit enorme kasteel is gebouwd door Frans I en heeft honderden kamers maar is vooral ook heel mooi. Mooi en elegant is zeker ook het kasteel van Chenonceau dat over de rivier de Cher is gebouwd. Maar ook de kastelen van Blois, Cheverny, Ambiose, Chaumont, Angers en vele andere zijn de moeite van het bezoeken waard. Eén van de mooiste is volgens mij het kasteel van Azay-le-Rideau dat precies de juiste verhoudingen heeft en in een bescheiden maar prachtig park ligt.
