Zoals de naam al aangeeft ligt Talmont-sur-Gironde langs de Gironde maar de rivier is hier zo breed dat er weinig verschil is met de Atlantische Oceaan. Het dorp is gebouwd op een rots waardoor het makkelijk te verdedigen is zeker omdat het ook nog eens een verdedigingsmuur had. In de Middeleeuwen controleerde Talmont zo de toegang van de Gironde en dus tot Bordeaux.

Van deze muur staat niet veel meer maar om de kerk is hij nog bijna helemaal intact. Omdat de kerk op een soort schiereiland staat levert dit een uiterst fraai plaatje op. Het dorp zelf bestaat uit witte huizen met blauwe luiken, een zeer fotogenieke combinatie. De straten staan recht op elkaar en doen denken aan een Romeins legerplaats maar dat is echter niet. Twee kilometer verderop zijn er wel opgravingen uit de tijd van het Romeinse Rijk, maar hier niet.

Tot slot heeft het dorpje een kleine maar mooie vissershaven waar vroeger steur aan wal werd gebracht. Tegenwoordig wordt er op glasaal en Lamprei gevist en die je kun je ongetwijfeld goed eten in één van de restaurants van het dorp.
