Naast wijn staat de Loire natuurlijk bekend om zijn kastelen. In het gebied rondom de rivier tussen Blois en Angers staan de mooiste kastelen van Frankrijk en misschien van de wereld. Montsoreau ligt langs de Loire en je vindt hier ook een prachtig voorbeeld, niet zo heel bekend maar niet minder mooi en zeker interessant.

Het kasteel dat nu aan de oever van de Loire staat is niet de eerste die op deze plek staat. In de elfde eeuw werd er hier een burcht gebouwd maar die is in de vijftiende eeuw flink verbouwd. De opdrachtgever was de kanselier van de koning die blijkbaar wat te besteden had.

Vroege Franse renaissance
Het kasteel van Montsoreau is op meerdere vlakken interessant. Ten eerste is het het enige kasteel dat in de bedding van de Loire is gebouwd. De rivier stond vroeger tot aan de voorgevel muur aan. Dat is nu niet meer het geval omdat de waterstand nu veel beter onder controle wordt gehouden.
Architectonisch is het kasteel interessant omdat het is gebouwd in een tijd dat kastelen hun militaire functie verliezen en meer een statussymbool van de adel begint te worden. De bouw is rond 1450 begonnen en dat was tevens de tijd dat Frankrijk zijn aandacht richt op de Renaissance in Italië. De kunst krijgt hierdoor in Frankrijk een nieuwe impuls en vooral de architectuur zoekt naar nieuwe vormen. Oude gotische vormen worden hierbij gecombineerd met elementen uit Italië.
Deze ontwikkeling is in het kasteel van Montsoreau goed te zien als je het weet. De plattegrond doet nog heel erg denken aan de kastelen zoals die in de middeleeuwen werden gebouwd. De massieve stijl en de wachttoren doen meer denken aan het Muiderslot dan aan Versailles. Aan de andere kant zijn de hoge ramen, de schoorstenen en de hoge versierde dakkapellen duidelijk voor de vorm en het comfort van de bewoners.
In het kasteel is een prachtige tentoonstelling over de geschiedenis van het gebied rondom de Loire te bewonderen. Het gebouw is historisch niet heel erg interessant want naast dat het bewoond is, heeft het geen rol gespeeld in de geschiedenis van Frankrijk. Toch is het kasteel beroemd geworden omdat in Alexander Dumas het als decor koos voor zijn roman ‘La dame de Montsoreau‘.
Het dorpje zelf heeft prachtige huizen die goed aansluiten bij de stijl van het kasteel. Er is een aardig kerkje en net buiten de bebouwde kom zijn dolmen, soort van hunebedden, te bewonderen. Het dorp heeft een aantal restaurants om lekker te eten en dat doe je hier natuurlijk met een goede wijn die hier in de directe omgeving wordt verbouwd. Voor witte wijnliefhebbers is er de frisse Touraine en als je voor rood gaat is Chinon een uitstekende keuze. Het eten is hier ook uitstekend en waarbij zoetwatervis, uitstekende groenten en kaas aan te bevelen zijn. Ik spreek uit ervaring.
Abdij van Fontevraud
Als je toch in Montsoreau bent is het zonde om niet even naar de Abdij van Fontevraud te rijden. Dit kloostercomplex is één van de belangrijkste van Frankrijk en ligt slechts vier kilometer ten zuiden van het dorp.
