Ars-en-Ré ligt op het de meest westelijke punt van de Ile de Ré, een eiland aan de Atlantische kunst op ongeveer dertig kilometer van La Rochelle. Het eiland is toegankelijk via een tolburg waarvan het tarief in de zomer niet mals is. Ondanks de vaste verbinding heeft het eiland zijn unieke karakter behouden. Het heeft zowaar twee plus beaux villages en Ars-en-Ré is daar er één van.

De economie van het eiland had vroeger twee branches. Zoals veel eilanden werd er gevist maar hier werd ook veel zout gewonnen. Dat gebeurde door zeewater in bassins te laten lopen en vervolgens laten verdamepen. Deze activiteiten vinden nog steeds plaats op het eiland maar is inmiddels voorbij gestreefd door de toeristenindustrie. Je kan zelfs zeggen dat zowel de zoutwinning en de visserij een onderdeel van de laatste is geworden.

Ile de Ré, dat ongeveer de helft zo groot is als Texel, is in de zomer één grote camping en erg populair bij Fransen. De beste stranden liggen in het zuiden, aan de andere kant van Ars-en-Ré.

De meest opvallende attractie van het dorp is de zwart-witte kerktoren die maar liefst veertig meter hoog is. De kleur van de toren is gekozen om een zeer praktische reden want zo was hij goed te zien vanaf zee zodat schippers hem als visueel baken konden gebruiken. De kerk zelf stamt uit de vijftiende eeuw in een gotische stijl al is heeft de vorm wel een heel eigen karakter. De kerk zelf heeft veel oudere wortels want het is bekend dat hier in de zesde eeuw al een kerk werd gebouwd als onderdeel van een kleine priorij.

De kerktoren is trouwens niet de enige toren in Ars-en-Ré want onze oosterburen hebben in de jaren veertig van de vorige eeuw hier ook een toren gebouwd al is die niet zo mooi. Net buiten het dorp vlak bij de kust staat een betonnen toren die deel uitmaakte van de Atlantikwall.

Naast deze twee torens heeft Ars-en-Ré een gezellige haven waar je vanzelfsprekend goed vis kan eten. Oesters kan ook maar liefhebbers daarvan kunnen beter naar de oesterkwekerij gaan want die hebben ze hier ook en verser kan je ze niet krijgen. De stranden zijn hier prima en vooral surfers kunnen hier hun hart ophalen.
