Midden in de moerassen tussen Rochefort en het eiland Oleron ligt het dorp Brouage. Deze vestingstad doet een beetje denken aan Willemstad of Naarden want het ligt compleet binnen de verdedigingswallen van een grote citadel. Maar dan in een moeras in de middle of nowhere. Het moet voor de verdedigers van deze stad vooral een gevecht tegen de verveling en de muggen zijn geweest want een vijandelijk leger heeft zich hier nooit gemeld.

In tegenstelling tot de Nederlandse vestigingssteden is Brouage niet ontstaan binnen de muren maar zijn die er later omheen gebouwd. Het dorpje is gesticht in 1555 maar werd pas in de zeventiende eeuw ommuurd.

In deze tijd vlak na de godsdienstoorlogen waren er nog altijd grote religieuze spanningen in Frankrijk. Kardinaal Richelieu was namens de minderjaarige koning de baas in Frankrijk en de leider van de katholieke fractie. Om de macht van de Hugonoten een beetje te beteugelen gaf hij opdracht om Brouage om te bouwen tot een vesting. Hiermee werd La Rochelle, een Hugonotenbolwerk, strategische een hak gezet.

De vesting Brouage was vooral een opslagplaats van wapens maar er kon ook een garnizoen van zesduizend man herbergen. Daarmee werd de vesting feitelijk onneembaar zeker gezien de moerassen die zich in de zeventiende eeuw rondom het dorp hadden gevormd. Een eeuw eerder lag Brouage nog een haven met directe toegang tot de Atlantische Oceaan maar door verzanding waren de verschillende eilanden voor de kust aan elkaar gegeroeid. De moerassen die daarbij zijn ontstaan vormde een natuurlijke bondgenoot van de verdedigers.

De citadel zelf omvat een vierkant van vierhonderd bij vierhonderd meter. De wallen zijn niet heel hoog maar met zeven bastions versterkt met kleine torentjes doen ze hun taak uitstekend. Een wandeling rondom Brouage over de muren is dan ook een must waar bij belangrijke punten op borden wordt uitgelegd wat er terplekke is gebeurd.

Door de omwalling kreeg het dorp poorten en nog steeds zijn dat de enige toegangswegen. Binnen de wallen is de kerk met zijn houten dak interessant en zijn er in de eetzaal van de barakken tentoonstellingen. Verder zijn er leuke kleine winkeltjes en aantrekkelijke restaurantjes waar je oesters kan eten.
