Montréal ligt in de Gers en vormt samen met Larressingle en Fourcès een driehoek van prachtige dorpen. Het dorp in zuidwest Frankrijk heeft een prachtig kleine dorpskern waar het heerlijk wandelen is. Maar in het landschap van de Armagnac liggen rondom het dorp een aantal interessante zaken verborgen; een Romeinse villa, een vervallen kerk en één van de belangrijkste vindplaatsen van fossielen in Frankrijk.

Het bezoek aan de drie dorpen was voor ons echt een dagje die we ons nog goed herinneren. Onze gîte lag ruim vijftig kilometer noordelijker en de route leidde ons door een prachtig glooiend landschap. Terwijl de auto vrolijk snorde belde oma halverwege dat één van onze cavia’s het tijdelijke had verwisseld voor het eeuwige. Dit nieuws viel slecht op de achterbank en we reden het laatste half uur in d-mineur.

Eenmaal in de Armagnac werd de sfeer iets beter en die lijn werd doorgezet nadat mijn partner besloot om onze oudste de waarheid over Sinterklaas te vertellen. Dit gaf hem het idee dat hij bij de volwassenen hoorde waardoor het caviadrama redelijk snel was vergeten. Ik zou hier nooit op zijn gekomen maar deze opvoedkundige aanpak werkte uitstekend. De sfeer werd zelfs nog beter toen wij in Fourcès een vogeltje redden uit de klauwen van een kat.
Romeinse villa
Via Larressingle kwamen we in de middag aan in Montréal. We besloten eerst de Romeinse villa te bezoeken. Romeinse opgravingen worden in Frankrijk altijd standaard als Gallo-Romeins aangeduid en ik weet eigenlijk niet waarom. Volgens mij was Gallië gewoon veroverd door Rome, door Ceasar met name, en vinden de huidige Fransen het beter om te spreken over Gallo-Romeins.
Het argument is dat de Romeinse cultuur versmolt met de Keltische en de elite de Romeinse cultuur omarmde. Dit was de normale methode van de Romeinen om veroverd gebied onder controle te krijgen. Een slimme strategie waarmee ze een enorm rijk hebben opgebouwd. Ik ben geen oudheidkundige maar ik heb nergens kunnen vinden dat de bewoners van Gallië zich Gallo-Romeinen noemden en van een Gallo-Romeins Rijk is ook geen sprake. Hoewel in het album De Kampioen van Asterix dit wel voorkomt maar het schijnt dat die bron veel later is geschreven.
De Romeinse villa is interessant en zeker een bezoek waard. Een villa doet ons snel denken aan een groot huis aan de rand van een vinex wijk met een carport en een slootje er achter. Dat is niet helemaal het concept van een Romeinse villa. Dat klinkt logisch maar als je zo’n villa in het echt bekijkt besef je pas hoe een woord een beeld vormt in je hoofd.
In het Romeinse tijd was de villa de hoeksteen van de landbouw. Naast de eigenaar en zijn familie woonden er knechten en slaven en die hadden allemaal hun eigen onderkomens. Naast de gebouwen die nodig waren voor de landbouw waren er ook ‘openbare voorzieningen’ zoals een tempel, een badhuis en een bakkerij. Het gehele complex was een redelijk zelfvoorzienend en is meer een kruising tussen een boerderij en een dorp dan een luxe woning met wat zuiltjes.
Dorpen zoals wij die nu kennen
Het meest opvallende van het hele complex besefte ik mij pas later. In tegenstelling tot de drie prachtige dorpen in de buurt heeft de villa totaal geen verdedigingswerken en is het open gebouwd. De Romeinen brachten naast de cultuur in Gallië vooral vrede en als je goed kijkt in het zuiden van Frankrijk kan je dit nog zien. De dorpen waar wij zo dol op zijn liggen vaak op strategische plaatsen met een dikke muur erom heen. De eerste muren verschenen echter pas toen het Romeinse Rijk in verval raakte waarna de dorpen zich binnen de muren ontwikkelden terwijl villa’s zonder muren onverdedigbaar waren en in verval raakten.
Het leuke van Montréal is dat je hier dit hele verhaal goed kan zien. De villa ligt op twee kilometer van het dorp dat op een goed verdedigbaar punt is gebouwd naast een rivier met een dikke muur om het tuig tegen te houden.
In het dorp zelf vind je aardige straatjes, een mooie kerk en gezelligheid. Er zijn een aantal goede restaurantjes maar als je het mij eerlijk vraagt vond ik Larressingle toch iets leuker. Het is kleiner en intiemer dan Montréal en daarom heeft het meer indruk gemaakt op mij.
Ruïne kerk
Even ten zuiden van het dorp op de oever van de rivier Auzoue staat een interessante ruïne van een kerk uit de twaalfde eeuw. Dit gebouw is het slachtoffer geworden van de godsdienst oorlogen waarin de Hugenoten de boel hier kort en klein hebben geslagen. Tot overmaat van ramp werd de kerk in de negentiende eeuw gebruikt als steengroeve om de parochiekerk in het dorp te verbouwen. Toch heeft het gebouw nog een aantal mooie marmeren details. Wij zijn er helaas niet geweest want we zijn gaan zwemmen in een enorm zwemparadijs dat geheel in Romeinse stijl was gebouwd.
Tot slot is moet er nog even vermeld worden dat vlakbij Montréal één van de belangrijkste vindplaatsen van fossielen in West-Europa ligt. Helaas is deze niet te bezoeken en liggen de belangrijkste gevonden voorwerpen in Toulouse in de een museum. Maar als je je hier in de buurt verveeld kan je altijd een grote steen doormidden hakken om te kijken of er een fossiel in zit.
