Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port ligt in Frans Baskenland in de Pyreneeën dichtbij de Spaanse grens. Het dorp ligt op de Camino Francé of wel de pelgrimsroute naar Santiago de Compostella. Deze positie heeft de ontwikkeling van de plaats in grote mate bepaald. Daarbij is Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port vooral een Baskische stad waar de de lokale cultuur een belangrijke rol speelt.

In de vallei in het noorden van de Auvergne waar drie rivieren bij elkaar komen is Blesle gebouwd en dat is natuurlijk goede plek dat in het verleden voorspoed opleverde en nu goed is voor mooie plaatjes. Het dorp kende zijn bloeitijd vanaf de twaalfde eeuw en er staan nog redelijk veel huizen en gebouwen uit die tijd. Dat maakt het een aangename plek om een middag of een ochtend te verblijven. In dit dorp vind je tal van mooie plekje waar je de rijke geschiedenis bijna kan voelen.

Het landschap nodigt uit voor een mooie wandeling en omdat Blesle op pelgrimsroute naar Santiago de Compostela ligt kan je een stukje meelopen.

Aubeterre-sur-Dronne herbergt één van de meest opvallende attracties van alle Beaux Villages in Frankrijk. In een enorme krijtrots bevindt zich de grootste ondergrondse kerk van Europa. De kerk is gedurende de middeleeuwen uitgehakt en is maar liefst twintig meter hoog. Naast deze ondergrondse kerk staat er nog een alleraardigst exemplaar boven de grond en natuurlijk mag een kasteel niet ontbreken in een Frans dorp.

Aïnhoa ligt vlakbij de grens met Spanje in Frans Baskenland in de Pyreneeën. De mooie vakwerkhuizen met hun rode luiken zijn kenmerkend voor deze streek en geven het dorp karakter. Het dorp is gebouwd als een bastide en is daarmee waarschijnlijk de zuidelijkste in zijn soort. Hoog boven het dorp staan drie witte kruizen op een berg met daarbij een begraafplaats met typische Baskische grafstenen.

Belcastel ligt niet ver van Najac en lijkt ook veel op dit andere dorp langs de rivier de Aveyron. Het is er allemaal wat rustiger en gemoedelijker hier want de toeristenindustrie heeft zich hier wat minder ontwikkeld. Net als Najac heeft Belcastel ook een kasteel dat hoog boven het dorp toornt, en net als in Najac is dit gebouw ook niet helemaal heel meer.

Rocamadour is de oudste toeristische attractie in de omgeving van de Dordogne. Als je de pelgrimstochten tenminste ziet als tourisme avant la lettre is het stadje al eeuwen een trekpleister voor reizigers en toeristen. Dankzij een unieke combinatie van geschiedenis, gezelligheid, kunst en een prachtig landschap werkt het stadje als een magneet op reizigers. Iedereen die in de buurt is mag het stadje gebouwd op een rots boven de rivier Alzou absoluut niet missen.

Saint Lizier ligt ten zuiden van Toulouse en ongeveer 45 kilometer ten westen van Foix aan de rivier de Salat. Dit uitzonderlijke dorp heeft maar liefst twee kathedralen en een bisschoppelijk paleis. Daarnaast staat een groot deel van de Romeinse ommuring nog overeind. De nabij gelegen Pyreneeën zorgen voor een prachtige achtergrond en maken het stadje een bijzonder plekje in Frankrijk. Helaas behoort het dorp niet meer tot de mooiste dorpen van Frankrijk maar is zeker interessant en een bezoek waard.

Een stadje dat al door de Romeinen werd bewoond en waar nu het aanzien van het dorp wordt gedomineerd door een grote kathedraal. Lauzerte is vrij groot voor een dorpje. Als je door de straten en over de pleinen loopt, voelt deze plaats ook niet als een dorp. Dat wil niet zeggen dat Lauzerte geen bezoek waard is, maar als ‘Plus Beaux Village de France’ voelt het toch redelijk groot.

Conques is gebouwd op een stijle helling van een vallei van de rivier Le Dourdou,  een zijrivier van de Lot. Als etappeplaats van de pelgrimsroute naar Santiago de Compostella was het dorp in het tweede deel van de middeleeuwen belangrijk. Door zijn ligging, de prachtige kerk, de vakwerkhuizen en prettige sfeer krijgt Conques van ons vijf sterren.
