La Grave ligt in een diep dal dat wordt omringt door bergen met toppen van meer dan drieduizend meter. Zoals zoveel dorpen in de Alpen is La Grave in de winter een waar Mekka voor de wintersporter en ‘s zomers het terrein voor bergsporters en sportieve wandelaars. In tegenstelling tot veel andere dorpen is La Grave niet in handen gekomen van grote projectontwikkelaars en zo is het dorp kleinschalig gebleven en heeft het haar originele karakter behouden.

In het dorp staat een kleine kerk die niet echt Frans aandoet. Dat klopt want het gebedshuis is opgetrokken in een stijl die uit Lombardije afkomstig is. Niet zo vreemd omdat dit deel van Frankrijk pas in de 1860 bij Frankrijk kwam. Daarvoor hoorde het bij een Noord-Italië en dan snap je dat de stijl van de kerk ook direct.

Als polderjongen blijven bepaalde zaken in de bergen best lastig. Kaartlezen is bijvoorbeeld totaal anders dan in Nederland. Onze gîte lag op nog geen 40 kilometer van La Grave en bij het boeken dacht ik aan een half uurtje rijden. Nou niet dus. We moesten twee beroemde cols (De Télégraphe en de Galibier) over en daarbij kwam nog dat we sowieso meer dan twintig minuten kwijt waren voordat we de berg waarop onze gîte stond.
Is dat erg? Helemaal niet. Rijden in de Alpen is één van de leukste dingen om te doen en omdat we op vakantie waren, had ik ook geen haast. Het is een prachtige rit en vooral de Galibier is één van de mooiste cols die er zijn. Een aanrader om te doen als je in de buurt bent.
Kabelbaan
Na meer dan twee uur reden we dan eindelijk La Grave binnen. Dit bleek een populaire plek te zijn want het hele dorp stond vol met auto’s maar uiteindelijk vonden we aan de andere kant van het dorp toch nog een plekje. Het is dus aan te raden om niet te laat naar Le Grave te gaan want een parkeerplaatsen zijn dan schaars.
De attractie van het dorp is ongetwijfeld de lift naar de gletsjer en dat bleek het onderwerp van een aardig dispuut te zijn binnen ons gezin. De kabelbaan is namelijk niet erg groot en een aantal leden van onze familie vonden het gewoon te eng om er in te gaan. Na een lange discussie besloten we niet naar boven te gaan en daar waren weer andere leden van het gezin niet mee eens. Misschien dat we er nog maar eens naar toe moeten.
Het dorp
Hoewel het dorp vol stond met auto’s waren er niet veel mensen in het dorp te vinden. Hier en daar liep een Fransman die irritant steeds irritant in mijn beeld verscheen op het moment dat ik een foto maakte, maar verder was het veel te rustig voor al die auto’s. Niet zo gek natuurlijk omdat La Grave een beginpunt is voor veel wandelaars.
Het dorp is best aardig en achter de kerk is een klein kerkhof met graven van mensen die in de bergen zijn omgekomen, een waarschuwing dat deze mooie omgeving zeer gevaarlijk kan zijn.
Vanaf de kerk heb je een prachtig uitzicht over het dorp en het dal met aan de andere kant de gletsjer van La Meije, de hoogste berg van het Massif de Écrins. Deze reus heeft maar liefst drie toppen waarvan de hoogste net iets lager is dan vierduizend meter. Bij helder weer is het uitzicht vanaf de kerk het meest indrukwekkende van het hele dorp.
