De alpen kennen we vooral van bergen, wandelingen en natuurlijk wintersport. Maar voor dit alles werd uitgevonden was er al kaas, en vooral lekkere kaas. Hoog in de Alpen groeit tussen de bergtoppen rijk en kruidig gras op de weiden. Dat wordt in zomer door de koeien omgezet in heerlijke romige melk die uiteindelijk wordt verwerkt tot kaas, hele goede kaas. Lees verder Kazen uit de Alpen →

Een klassiek Frans dorp heeft een grote kerk, een rivier en als het even kan een mooi kasteel. Bonneval sur Arc lijkt op niets van dit alles. Het dorp in de Haut-Maurianne in de Franse Alpen en ligt in een diepe vallei dat wordt omgeven door bergen waarvan de meeste toppen hoger zijn dan drieduizend meter.

Op deze hoogte is geen boom te zien en is hout schaars waardoor de huizen bijna compleet gemaakt zijn van leisteen. Dat geeft Bonneval een heel eigen karakter en sfeer.  Lees verder Bonneval sur Arc: alpendorp met huizen van leisteen *** →

Saint-Véran in de Hautes-Alpes is volgende de Fransen het hoogste dorp in Europa dat het hele jaar door bewoond wordt. Maar er zijn meer dorpen in de Alpen die dit claimen. Met ruim 2000 meter hoogte ligt het in ieder geval hoger dan de top van de Mont Ventoux en is het daarmee het dorp in de Queras het hoogste van Frankrijk. En dat vinden wij voldoende.

La Grave ligt in een diep dal dat wordt omringt door bergen met toppen van meer dan drieduizend meter. Zoals zoveel dorpen in de Alpen is La Grave in de winter een waar Mekka voor de wintersporter en ‘s zomers het terrein voor bergsporters en sportieve wandelaars. In tegenstelling tot veel andere dorpen is La Grave niet in handen gekomen van grote projectontwikkelaars en zo is het dorp kleinschalig gebleven en heeft het haar originele karakter behouden.

Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval ligt op de plek waar twee takken van de rivier de Giffre samenkomen. Het dorp is ontstaan nadat er hier in de twaalfde eeuw een klooster werd gesticht. Het klooster staat er nog en de eetzaal uit de zeventiende eeuw is nog te bezichtigen terwijl een deel van het kerkje uit de dertiende eeuw er ook nog staat. Maar de grootste attractie van Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval is de waanzinnige natuur.

Conflans ligt in het dal van Albertville in de Savoie midden in de Franse Alpen. Het dorp ligt op de plek waar de Arly in de rivier Isère uitmondt en daar heeft het dorp dan ook zijn naam aan te danken. Dankzij de strategische ligging hoog boven het dal beheerste Conflans eeuwenlange de omgeving. In de negentiende eeuw kwam daar een einde aan door de groei van Albertville waardoor het Middeleeuwse stadje zijn invloed zag dalen. Je hebt er prachtig uitzicht op de stad waar ooit de Olympische Spelen werden gehouden.

Chamonix wordt de hoofdstad van de bergsport genoemd. Aangezien wij geen klimmers zijn, drie van de vier gezinsleden hebben hoogtevrees, dachten wij niet zo veel te zoeken te hebben in dit stadje aan de voet van de Mont Blanc. Maar dat bleek helemaal verkeerd gedacht want Chamonix is helemaal leuk en wij hebben er ons twee dagen uitstekend vermaakt zonder dat we een klimbijl hebben aangeraakt. Hoogtepunten waren het bezoek aan de Mer du Glace en de Aiguille du Midi.

Eten is in Frankrijk een belangrijk onderdeel van de cultuur en één van de reden voor ons om er vakantie te vieren. Toch kom je soms curieuze culinaire zaken tegen waar je op zijn minst je wenkbrauwen van optrekt. Zo kwamen we de afgelopen jaren een automaat tegen waar je kaas kan kopen, eentje waar je ruwe melk kan tappen en een pizza kan kopen.

Frankrijk heeft van alle landen in West-Europa waarschijnlijk de meest verschillende landschappen en wij hebben er al veel gezien. Nu krijg ik weleens de vraag wat ik het mooiste gebied vind en daar heb ik eigenlijk geen goed antwoord op. Daarom heb ik een lijst gemaakt van landschappen die volgens mij de moeite waard zijn om eens te gaan bezoeken. Dit zijn volgens mij de streken met het mooiste natuurschoon. Daarbij heb ik wel een voorliefde van bergen en het moet gezegd worden dat ik (nog) niet in Bretagne en Corsica ben geweest. Ik heb zo het vermoeden dat deze regio’s ook op dit lijstje horen. Hierbij mijn lijst van de mooiste landschappen in willekeurige volgorde.

Frankrijk staat op je shortlist van de vakantiebestemming en de bergen lijken je wel leuk. Kijkend naar de atlas van Europa zie je dat Frankrijk best een groot land is. Het wordt je duidelijk dat je het hele land niet in een weekje kan bekijken. Er moet dus een keuze worden gemaakt. In dit artikel geeft ik een overzicht van de mooiste Franse streken met bergen.
