Séguret ligt in het noorden van de Vaucluse en is gebouwd op de noordelijke kant van de bergen van de Dentelles de Montmirail, waardoor het uitkijkt op de vlakte van het prachtige Rhônedal. Het dorp  staat vol met prachtige oude huisjes en omdat het autovrij is, waan je je er in de middeleeuwen. De oostelijke oever van de Rhône wordt, in de buurt van Séguret, voor een groot deel gebuikt om druiven te verbouwen, waarvan vanzelfsprekend wijn wordt gemaakt.

De beroemde wijndorpen Chateauneuf du Pape en Vacqueyras liggen om de hoek en de weg naar Séguret, vanaf Orange, is voor iedere wijnliefhebber dan ook een waar feest. De hoeveelheid wijnranken is overweldigend, waarbij langs de weg om de honderd meter aan beide kanten hoge cipressen staan, terwijl op de achtergrond De Mont Ventoux het plaatje compleet maakt.

Wijn

Bijna achthonderd hectare van de wijngaarden behoort tot Séguret en daarvan maken de dorpelingen uitstekende wijn. Het dorp heeft zijn eigen Appellation dat is verdeeld over drie ‘terroirs’ die verschillen qua bodem. Hier worden ook drie verschillende druivenrassen gekweekt; Grenache, Syrah en Mourvèdre. Bij de vinificatie worden deze gemengd tot een heerlijke frisse elegante wijn. Met name de rode wijn heeft een zeer eigen karakter.

Het dorp is alleen voor bewoners met de auto toegankelijk en dus parkeer je op een grote parkeerplaats vlak voor het dorp. Het pad vanaf de parkeerplaats is redelijk steil, waardoor ik op mijn slippers goed moest oppassen. Gelukkig even maar, want het pad is niet lang.

Een poort geeft toegang tot het dorp, waarna de weg zich vervolgt langs mooie pandjes met daarin de gebruikelijke ateliers waar plaatselijke kunstenaars hun waar uitventen. Aan de rechterkant heb je een prachtig uitzicht op het Rhônedal.

Kerststal

Naast wijn is het dorp bekend om zijn kerstviering en met name zijn kerststal. Al sinds mensenheugenis is het traditie dat er in december een levende kerststal wordt tentoongesteld. Dat is tegenwoordig geen reden meer om naar de Provence af te reizen, want tegenwoordig heeft elk zichzelf respecterend tuincentrum een levende kerststal staan, inclusief bijverdienende tieners met smartphone geluidjes.

En net als bij ons, is het in Séguret ook mogelijk om zo’n kerststal in het klein aan te schaffen. Ze hebben er daar in het dorp echt iets van gemaakt, want in tal van winkeltjes kan je schaalmodellen van het gelukkige gezin krijgen. Daarbij moet wel gezegd worden dat de beeldjes prachtig zijn vervaardigd. Als je er van houdt kan je hier je hart ophalen, ook in de zomer.

Fontaine des Mascarons

Naast de keerstuitstalling is het dorp tevens bekend om zijn fontein. Deze Fontaine des Mascarons staat in het begin van het dorp en stamt uit de zestiende eeuw. Het is een fraai werkje met drie maskers die dienen als waterspuwers.

Het kerkje staat hoger op de berg en die bereik je via prachtige straatjes, die in juli vol staan met planten en bloemen. De sfeervolle straatjes en steegjes zijn hier en daar best steil en zijn bestraat met kasseien. Bovenaan de berg vind je de kerk, die bij ons bezoek helaas was gesloten. Naast de kerk vind je hier de resten van een kasteel, een oriëntatietafel en natuurlijk een prachtig uitzicht.

In de buurt van Séguret

De Vaucluse is een prachtig stukje Frankrijk waar veel te zien is. In het westen ligt Orange, een Romeinse stad met een fraai theater en een Nederlandse connectie. Ten oosten van het dorp ligt de Mont Ventoux en in het zuiden Avignon met zijn prachtige binnenstad.
