De ligging van Tourtour is echt fantastisch. Het dorp ligt ruim zeshonderd meter hoog, waardoor het een prachtig uitzicht heeft op bijna de gehele Provence. Bij mooi weer zie je in het zuiden de bergen van Frejus en in het noordwesten is de Mont Ventoux te zien. Maar niet alleen het uitzicht is betoverend. De gezellige straatjes, de sfeervolle pleintjes en de Romaanse huizen en gebouwen geven je het gevoel dat je hier nooit meer weg wil.

Wij bezochten Tourtour aan het einde van een warme julidag. Dat is één van de beste momenten om een dorpje of stadje te bezoeken. De warmte is dan over zijn hoogtepunt heen en de horden toeristen zijn net weg, of bezig te vertrekken naar de camping waar de warme maaltijd wacht. Bovendien zorgt de late middagzon voor de mooiste kleuren, waardoor het dorp nog fraaier wordt. Een bezoek aan bijvoorbeeld Carcasonne kan je het best beginnen om een uur of vijf.

Dit geldt zeker ook voor Tourtour. Na een dag vol activiteiten in de natuur, besloten we aan het einde van de middag toch even het dorp in de Provence te bezoeken. De auto konden we direct voor de ingang van het dorp kwijt, waarna wij lopend de straatjes indoken.
Heerlijke geuren
Na amper tweehonderd meter lopen, kwamen we er door de heerlijke geuren uit een restaurant achter dat de natuurtocht ons behoorlijk hongerig had gemaakt.
Er was geen houden meer aan en voordat we het wisten zaten we achter een koel biertje op het dorpsplein waar drie gitaristen rustige jazz produceerden het plaatje compleet maakten. We wisten het zeker: hier gaan we nooit meer weg!
Een nadeel van een laat bezoek is wel dat de attracties meestal al gesloten zijn. Wij hebben dus een bezoek aan de oliemolen en de verzameling fossielen moeten missen, maar daar ben in een dorp als Tourtour eigenlijk ook niet voor.
Hoewel de oliemolen wel interessant is. Hij dateert uit de zeventiende eeuw en wordt nog steeds gebruikt. In september worden hier miljoenen olijfjes van de bomen rondom Tourtour geperst tot olie. Ben je rond die tijd in de buurt, dan is een bezoekje zeker de moeite waard. Helaas voor ons maar we hebben wel genoten van de schilderachtige straatjes en steegjes waar op het late uur zowaar bewoners te zien zijn. Normaal zijn dit soort dorpjes uitgestorven op toeristen na dan. De lage zon zorgde voor prachtige licht.
Hoewel Tourtour niet heel groot is, heeft het toch maar liefst drie kastelen, althans de resten daarvan. Het oudste kasteel, of de ruïne daarvan, dateert uit de dertiende eeuw. Duidelijk is dat hier iets te verdedigen viel tegen de plunderende huursoldaten of ander naar volk.
Vandaag de dag is er nog een puik kasteeltje met peperbustorens te vinden dat nu dienst doet als gemeentehuis. Helaas konden wij vanwege het late uur niet naar binnen. Dat gold ook voor De Saint Denis, een kerkje naar Romaans model. Dat was wel jammer, maar het geeft ons een reden om hier nog eens terug te keren. Wat weer niet zo naar is.
