Giverny is een bescheiden dorpje vlakbij de Seine op een dik uur rijden van Parijs met een kerkje een leuk straatje kortom een dorp zoals honderden in Frankrijk. Toch is Giverny wereldberoemd en dat heeft alles te maken dat hier de beroemdste schilder van Frankrijk voor een groot deel van zijn woonde; Claude Monet.

In Étretat staan de beroemdste bogen van Frankrijk, geheel gemaakt van kalk en vormgegeven door de natuur. In dit charmante maar druk bezochte badplaatsje werd het toerisme in Frankrijk feitelijk uitgevonden. Hier komen al meer dan tweehonderd jaar mensen die de drukte van Parijs willen ontlopen en genieten van het magische spel van schaduw en licht van de lucht, zee en rotsen. Deze plek was de speeltuin de hoge adel van Europa, de nieuwe rijken en werd vereeuwigd door de beste schilders die Frankrijk voortbracht.

Ploumanac’h ligt aan de noordelijke kust van Bretagne op een eigen schiereiland en is beroemd om zijn roze rotsen. Deze zijn het best te zien direct langs de kustlijn dat hier uitermate grillig verloopt. Het dorpje Saint-Guirec is een gezellige mix van haven en strand. Het heidelandschap direct achter de kust maakt dit paradijsje voor wandelaars compleet.

Peyrusse-le-Roc ligt in het mooie gebied van tussen rivieren de Lot en de Aveyron. Wat nu een rustig dorp is was aan het einde van middeleeuwen een drukke stad. Vlakbij de Middellandse Zee tussen Montpellier en de Camargue ligt de prachtige vestingstad Aigues-Mortes. De stad is in de middeleeuwen gebouwd is verbazingwekkend goed bewaard gebleven en trekt nu veel toeristen. Deze worden getrokken door de prachtige muren en de historische gebouwen en de gezellige sfeer op en rondom de pleinen.

Het koninklijk kasteel van Amboise is één van de plekken in Frankrijk waar heel veel geschiedenis en kunst samenkomen. Dat wordt wel van meer plekkeen gezegd maar hier is het letterlijk zo. Het begon al aan het begin van de middeleeuwen toen de Franse vader des Vaderland Clovis hier al druk doende was. Aan het einde van de middeleeuwen waren de koningen Karel VIII en Frans I vaak in het kasteel te vinden. Met deze twee laatste vorsten laten we traditioneel de middeleeuwen in Frankrijk eindigen waarvan het verblijf in van Leonardo da Vinci aan het Franse hof in Amboise de bevestiging is. Het dorpje Die ligt in het departement de Drôme en is een mooi dorp in een geweldige omgeving. Hoewel de Drôme misschien niet de meest populaire vakantieregio is van Frankrijk heb ik veel Frankrijkliefhebbers horen zeggen dat ze graag nog een keer op vakantie zouden willen naar Die. Zelf heb ik het geluk dat mijn Franse schoonfamilie er een vakantiehuis heeft waardoor ik er meerdere keren per jaar te vinden ben.

De Abdij van Pontigny ligt even boven Auxerre in het noorden van Bourgondië. Van het oorspronkelijke klooster is niet veel meer over maar van de kloosterkerk des ter meer, die is namelijk nog helemaal in tact. Na de bouw behoorde het tot de grootste kerken van West-Europa en ook nu nog zijn de formaten enorm. De vormgeving is echter sober en bescheiden en dat maakt het samen een formidabel gebouw.

Op zoek naar een bestemming niet al te ver van Nederland kom ik terecht in Marville in Lotharingen in de de zgn  ‘Gaume-streek’.  Een streek die bekend staat om zijn zachte klimaat en vele prachtige dorpjes met huizen van gele zandsteen aan zowel Belgische als Franse zijde van de grens. Wat Marville bijzonder maakt, is dat een aantal van de huizen in de Spaanse renaissancestijl gebouwd zijn toen de stad in de 16e eeuw was ingedeeld bij de Spaanse Nederlanden.

Het kasteel van Lodewijk XIV in Versailles is één van de meest indrukwekkende gebouwen die ik ken. Het is niet alleen enorm qua afmetingen maar is ook nog eens mooi en smaakvol ontworpen en op een heel hoog niveau uitgevoerd en dat is een combinatie die je niet vaak tegenkomt. Dat is ook de voornaamste reden om het kasteel van binnen te bekijken. Daarvoor moet je je wel door de hordes toeristen worstelen maar dat is het zeker waard.
