Op een klein uurtje ten westen van Perpignan ligt het schilderachtige dorpje Eus. Dit oude gehucht is gebouwd op een berg met op de top een versterkt kerkje. In de straatjes en vanaf de pleintjes heb je een schitterend uitzicht op het dal van de Têt en de stad Prades met op de achtergrond de indrukwekkende berg Pic du Canigou.

Eus is een oud dorp dat is gebouwd op de funderingen van een Romeinse wachtpost. Met een beetje strategisch inzicht is het ook duidelijk waarom: wie Eus bezit, beheerst de ingang van de vallei van Prades en daarmee een gebied met rijke landbouwgronden en mooie dorpjes.

De route naar Eus is een feest. Wij kwamen via de weg vanuit Perpignan en dan zie je het dorpje aan je rechterhand liggen. Op deze provinciale weg kan je het dorp niet missen want de bewegwijzering is prima. Eenmaal van deze grote weg af slingert de weg zich heerlijk omhoog, waarbij je steeds wordt getrakteerd op mooi uitzicht op het gehucht en de omgeving.

Wij bezochten Eus begin augustus en dat is toch hoogseizoen en dus hou je rekening met een van toeristen uitpuilend dorpje. Maar niets van dit alles. Het was er buitengewoon rustig. Dit was voor ons natuurlijk een aangename verrassing maar gezien het forse parkeerterrein had de gemeente toch meer volk verwacht. Nu was het warm en zo rond het middaguur, maar meer dan drie auto’s met toeristen hebben we niet gezien. Later in de middag bezochten we Villefranche de Conflent en daar was het wel druk.

Eus zelf bleek niet helemaal uitgestorven en we vonden in het lagere gedeelte van het dorp een terrasje waar we een kop koffie dronken. Terwijl wij van onze versnaperingen en het uitzicht genoten vulde het terras zich langzaam met dagjesmensen en fietsers, waardoor zowaar de schaduwplekjes onder de dikke boom allemaal bezet waren.

De Fransen besloten massaal lunch te bestellen, waardoor al snel grote borden met heerlijke salades en visschotels uit het kleine pandje van het restaurantje werden gedragen. Na enige twijfel besloten we toch maar de kleine straatjes te verkennen en niet mee te doen aan de smulpartij. Ik vraag mij nog steeds af of dit wel een juist besluit was.

Kunstenaars

Combineer een mooi dorpje met het zuiden van Frankrijk en als een soort chemisch proces ontstaan er vanzelf kunstenaars. Dat is ook gebeurd in Eus en ik geef die kunstenaars geen ongelijk. Ik ben geen kunstenaar maar zelfs ik kreeg inspiratie toen ik door de kleine steegjes liep. Een lichte aandrang tot het maken van een gedicht, een sonnet of iets dergelijks maakte zich van mij meester. Gelukkig wist de geharde toerist in mij de overhand te krijgen, waarna we in de hete middagzon het dorp verder onderzochten. Zeg je kunstenaars in een Frans dorp, dan zijn de Nederlanders niet ver weg. En ook dit klopt, want in Eus woont en werkt een Nederlandse kunstenares: Nelly van Ledden Hulsebosch. Ze maakt zeker geen onaardig werk.

Kerkje

Doordat het dorp geheel autovrij is, is het lekker wandelen door het dorp, al zijn de straatjes en steegjes soms behoorlijk steil. Met name op de route naar de kerk is het klimmen geblazen. Het kerkje toornt fier boven het dorp uit en was natuurlijk dicht toen wij voor de deur stonden. Ook het kerkelijke personeel was kennelijk druk met de lunch. Dat mocht de pret niet drukken want het is de moeite waard om wat verder te klauteren en om de kerk te lopen.

Aan de zij- en achterkant van de kerk is duidelijk de militaire oorsprong van het gehucht te zien. Het wemelt er van nauwe spleten en spelonken en samen met de schaduw vormt het een prima plek voor een gezonde picknick met een prettig uitzicht. Voor kinderen is er genoeg te klauteren en te klimmen zodat je als ouders zeker nog rustig kan uitbuiken.

Neem op de terugweg de route aan de linkerkant van de kerk want die leidt je door een tunneltje, waardoor je je onmiddellijk in de middeleeuwen waant. Je kan er de geschiedenis bijna ruiken. En dat is niet overdreven, want in afgelopen de twintig eeuwen is hier af en toe flink gevochten. Het hele gebied is twee eeuwen in Spaanse handen geweest en de Fransen hebben meerdere oorlogen gevoerd om het in handen te krijgen.

In de omgeving van Eus

Eus ligt in een streek waar voldoende te doen is. Erg leuk is een ritje in de Train Jaune (gele trein). Deze kleine trein rijdt over een spoor van ruim 60 kilometer en bereikt in Bolquère bijna een hoogte van 1600 meter. Dat is het hoogst gelegen treinstation in Frankrijk. In de zomer rijdt deze trein, speciaal voor toeristen, zonder dak en dan heb je mooi uitzicht. Helaas begon het op de dag dat wij de streek bezochten enorm te regenen, niet echt een goed idee om je in een cabriolettrein te verplaatsen.

Het parcours eindigt in Mont-Louis, een vestingstadje waar Vauban de muren heeft getekend. Nu herbergt het stadje nog altijd een opleidingscentrum voor para’s. Naast deze historische militaire monumenten is een enorme zonneoven te bezoeken die in 1949 werd gebouwd. Daarmee is het de oudste van de wereld en een voorbeeld van alle andere installaties die later zijn gebouwd.

Tot slot zijn er in de directe omgeving van Eus maar liefst drie ‘Beaux Villages’ te vinden: Villefranche de Conflent, Evol en Mosset.
