In het diepe zuiden van Frankrijk op een uurtje rijden van Perpignan ligt een bizar maanlandschap dat Orgues de l’Ille sur Tet heet. Door een unieke geologische opbouw, corrosie en ingrijpen van de mens zijn er hoge kliffen gevormd die doen denken aan orgelpijpen. Het is niet heel erg groot maar het is wel een unieke ervaring om vlak langs de kolommen te lopen. Voor kinderen is het een leuke attractie.

Castelnou ligt in het Franse deel van Catalonië niet ver van Perginan. Het dorp is ontstaan in de tiende eeuw rondom het kasteel dat er nog steeds staan, of de resten daarvan. Het dorp is gebouwd langs twee parallelle straten en heeft een schilderachtig uitstraling. Opvallend zijn de gemeenschappelijk ronde broodovens die hier nog zijn te vinden.

Het dorp Mosset is gebouwd op een berg in het woeste landschap van de Pyreneeën ten westen van Perpignan. Het dorp is echt een plaatje en lijkt te zijn gemaakt voor een ansichtkaart. Desondanks is Mosset nog niet ontdekt door het massatoerisme waardoor je in de steile straatjes de sfeer van het dorp nog kan ontdekken.

Op een klein uurtje ten westen van Perpignan ligt het schilderachtige dorpje Eus. Dit oude gehucht is gebouwd op een berg met op de top een versterkt kerkje. In de straatjes en vanaf de pleintjes heb je een schitterend uitzicht op het dal van de Têt en de stad Prades met op de achtergrond de indrukwekkende berg Pic du Canigou.

Vanaf de stichting in 1090 is Villefranche de Conflent een vesting geweest. Het dorp ligt ook op een strategische plek tussen de hoge rotsen en de plek waar de rivieren Têt en Cady bij elkaar komen. De militaire waarde van het stadje was eeuwenlang groot. Nog in de negentiende eeuw zijn de vestingmuren vernieuwd en vergroot. Napoleon III was de laatste die opdracht gaf om Villefranche de Conflent nog eens flink onder handen te nemen. Daarover later meer.

Evol ligt in het zuidelijkste puntje van het vaste land van Frankrijk. Het mooie dorpje in de Pyreneeën wordt beheerst door de ruïne van een oud kasteel en het vanzelfsprekende kerkje, Romaans natuurlijk. Het dorp in de Vallespir is geheel autovrij waardoor de schilderachtige straatjes goed tot hun recht komen.
