De Ardèche is een geliefde streek bij toeristen en vooral Nederlanders zijn hier in de zomer veel te vinden. Hier vind je ook alles wat we in Nederland niet hebben. Een heerlijk klimaat, een prachtig landschap met kliffen en kloven en prachtige zuidelijk dorpjes. Balazuc is daar geen uitzondering op en ligt hoog op een rots boven de rivier de Ardèche.

In Balazuc lijkt het elke dag vakantie. Het klimaat is heerlijk warm, de straatjes schilderachtig, het eten goed en je kan altijd even afkoelen in de rivier. Dankzij de toeristen is de streek welvarend. Je kan het je nauwelijks voorstellen, maar ooit waren hier geen toeristen waren en dat hier diepe armoede heerste. In de negentiende eeuw kreeg de streek een economische impuls met de introductie van de zijderups. Deze opleving bleek echter tijdelijk en echt goed ging het hier pas toen na de jaren zestig van de vorige eeuw we hier massaal onze vakantie gingen vieren.

De geschiedenis van Balazac is natuurlijk veel ouder. In de middeleeuwen was hier ook niet altijd feest want het dorp lag meer dan eens in de frontlinie van de oorlogen die hier zijn uitgevochten. Uit die tijd stampt ook het kasteel en de versterkte Romaanse kerk. De nauwe straatjes en steegjes vormen een doolhof waar het heerlijk wandelen is. Eten doe je hier vanzelfsprekend goed in één van de restaurants waar lokale producten als geitenkaas en asperges op de kaart staan. Tot slot is een kanotocht over de Ardèche een echte aanrader.
