Le Poët-Laval ligt midden in de streek De Drôme tussen de graan- en lavendelvelden. Het dorp in het zuiden van Frankrijk heeft een lange geschiedenis met Hospitaalridders en protestanten. Maar in Nederland is Le Poët-Laval bekend omdat Gerard Reve hier in de jaren zeventig woonde, maar dat zal je in geen enkele Franse gids tegenkomen.

Het huis waar de schrijver woonde staat midden in het dorp. Hij doopte het ‘La Grace’ verbouwde het naar goed Frans gebruik helemaal zelf. Reve als bricoleur, dat kan je je toch bijna niet voorstellen.

Naast Reve bedevaartsoord heeft Le Poët-Laval nog wel meer te bieden. Bijzonder is de protestante kerk die Lodewijk XIV heeft overleefd. Dit komt doordat de kerk onderdeel was van het gemeentehuis waardoor het gespaard werd door de katholieke slopershamer na de herroeping van het Edict van Nantes. Nu is het museum van het protestantisme in de Dauphiné.

Naast deze protestante kerk is er een ruïne van een kasteel in het dorp dat ooit de zetel was van een commandant van de hospitaalridders. Deze ridderorde, die nog altijd bestaat onder de naam Orde van Malta, had tot doel om de bedevaarders in Jerusalem te beschermen. Vreemd genoeg besloot de commandant in Le Poët-Laval in de zestiende eeuw zich aan te sluiten bij de protestanten en daarmee werd het dorp dat ook. Het kasteel is open voor publiek.

Le Poët-Laval is bovenal een prachtig dorp met kleine straatjes, steegjes en trapjes. Je kan er heerlijk wandelen en het heeft voor een dorp prima faciliteiten voor toeristen. Er zijn verschillende restaurants, waaronder een hotel met een uitstekende kaart, en een camping met een zwembad.
