Grignan ligt in de prachtige streek de Drôme op de grens van de Vaucluse in het zuiden van Frankrijk. Het dorp wordt gedomineerd door het kasteel die hier al sinds de elfde eeuw staat.

Het kasteel was lang zetel van de machtige lokale familie Adhemar. Toen in de zestiende eeuw de vesting geen militair doel meer had besloot de familie het om te toveren tot een prachtig Renaissance paleis. Dat is goed geslaagd want het geldt nu als het mooiste Renaissance kasteel van Zuid-Frankrijk.

In de middeleeuwen ontstond er rond de burcht een drop en dat is nog altijd goed terug te zien in het huidige straatpatroon. Je kan er dan ook heerlijk door heen slenteren of lekker een glas nemen op één van de vele terrassen.

De kerk die bij het kasteel staat is ook interessant en het loont de moeite om deze even te bekijken. Het kerkplein is bereikbaar door twee fraaie trappen. De kerk is letterlijk tegen de berg aangebouwd en dat is ook de voorgevel te zien; de linker van de twee torens ‘leunt’ tegen de rots. Deze toren is puur voor de sier want alleen de andere toren heeft klokken. De stijl van de kerk is half gotisch en half Renaissance en dat is altijd een spannende combinatie.

Binnen is het duidelijk dat de laatste stijl hier heeft gewonnen. Het interieur is licht en heeft mooie classicistische elementen die elegant worden geaccentueerd door bladgoud. De mooie ronde ramen hebben een bijzondere vorm en verdienen daarom ook de aandacht. Tot slot is het bijzonder dat je op het dak van de kerk kan lopen want daar is een groot terras waar je een prachtig uitzicht hebt op het dorp en het landschap. Let daarbij even op de regenafvoer die zijn versiert met dierenkoppen, net zoals het kasteel van Chambord dat heeft.

Naast het kasteel  en de kerk is er in het dorp een miniatuur dorp te zien en dat is natuurlijk leuk voor kinderen, maar ook voor volwassenen. Met meer dan zeventig huisjes en duizend verschillende figuren is een compleet dorp uit de Provence nagebouwd bij Le Village Proveçal Miniature.

In juni en juli is Grignan op zijn mooist omdat dan rondom het dorp de lavendelvelden in bloei staan. Je waant je dan in een ansichtkaart en elke foto die je maakt ziet er direct zo uit. Dat zijn dan ook de beste maanden om het dorp, en tevens de streek, te bezoeken.

Het dorp heeft sinds 2019 het predicaat ‘Plus Beaux Village de France’.
