Mirmande ligt tussen Valence en Montélimar pal naast de ‘Route du Soleil’. Het dorpje in de Drôme is een uitstekend voorbeeld van terrasbouw dat goed is te zien als je komt aanrijden. Eenmaal in het dorp kan je heerlijk wandelen door de nauwe straatjes en steegjes met kenmerkende bogen tussen de oude huizen.

Mirmande groeit sinds de dertiende eeuw eigenlijk continue tot een stad van meer dan drieduizend inwoners in de negentiende eeuw. Deze groei was in eerste instantie vooral te danken aan de tolrechten die het dorp had op de Rhône waar altijd al veel op werd gevaren. Die bracht niet alleen geld in de gemeentekas, het zorgde er ook voor Mirmande een pleisterplaats werd voor de handel op de rivier.

In de zestiende eeuw groeit het dorp letterlijk uit zijn jasje en wordt er een tweede, grotere muur aangelegd om alle inwoners te beschermen. Naast de handel ontwikkelde de landbouw rondom het dorp zich. In de negentiende eeuw beleefde het dankzij de kweek van de zijderups een nieuwe bloei en zag de toekomst er zeer zonnig uit.

Maar het liep allemaal anders want aan het einde negentiende eeuw ging het mis. De vraag naar zijde daalde dramatisch waardoor het één na de andere boer het voor gezien hield. Het dorp liep leeg en de gebouwen raakte in verval. Dit proces werd versterkt door de belasting. Deze werd namelijk berekend aan de hand van de hoeveelheid dakpannen en om onder belastingverplichtingen uit te komen sloopten huiseigenaren massaal de daken. Je hoeft geen bouwkunde te hebben gestudeerd om te bedenken dat dit een negatieve invloed had op de conditie van de gebouwen in het dorp.

Mirmande werd uiteindelijk gered door een combinatie van fruit en kunst. De landbouw stapte over op fruit en het vervallen dorp bleek aantrekkelijk te zijn voor kunstenaars. Een beetje ruïne levert kennelijk inspiratie op. André Lhote was daar er één van. De kubist vestigde zich in het dorp en zette het zo weer op de kaart.

Ook nu nog wonen er kunstenaars in Mirmande die hun werk exposeren in één van de twee kerken. Naast kunst is er aandacht voor de natuur. Zo is er een botanische route uitgezet met aandacht voor de flora van de Drôme.

Mirmande is een prachtig dorp dat door zijn ligging aan de snelweg een perfecte plaats is om wat langer te stoppen tijdens een lange rit. Dat is veel aantrekkelijker dan een overvolle aire en het dorp heeft een bakker waardoor ook de hongerige reiziger aan zijn trekken komt.
