Ooit was Oingt een machtige vesting dat het westen van Lyon beheerste is daarvan slechts de Porte de Nizy, de kapel en een toren van over. Dit dorp in de Beaujolais is voor een groot deel autovrij en daarom is het goed wandelen hier. Voor echte wandelliefhebbers natuurlijk niet want daarvoor is het dorp veel te klein.

Onze gîte lag op een uurtje rijden ten noorden van Oingt en omdat we de tijd hadden besloten we de snelweg links te laten liggen. Dit maakte de rit een half uur langer maar zo konden we goed het landschap bekijken.

En dat viel niet tegen want de noordelijke Beaujolais is prachtig. Het is net iets ruiger dan de Mâconnais waar wij vandaan kwamen; het heeft iets steilere hellingen en iets hogere bergen. Het is dan ook een feest om hier doorheen te rijden waar de wijngaarden worden afgewisseld met kleine bossen en intieme dorpjes.

Wijn

Over de wijn gesproken: Veel Nederlanders, en ik zelf ook, kennen Beaujolais vooral van het feit dat dit zo’n beetje de eerste wijn is de gedronken kan worden in van het wijnjaar. Een jaar of twintig geleden was het in de herfst vaak een reden voor een feestje als de eerste Beaujolais in Nederland was gearriveerd. Le Beaujolais primeur est arrivé! Dit lijkt helemaal te zijn verdwenen en ik heb geen idee waarom. Misschien was het gewoon maar een marketingdingetje van de wijnhandelaren. Hoe dan ook, het was best gezellig.

Voordat we in Oingt arriveren slingeren we ons door de wijngaarden waarbij we besloten om deze in Nederland vergeten wijn maar weer eens te proeven. Een primeur kon ik niet vinden maar de wijn is lekker fris en fruitig en smaakte prima bij de salade die we die avond nuttigen.

Bergkam

Maar terug naar Oingt waar ik niet achter ben gekomen hoe je dat precies in het Frans uitspreekt. Het dorp ligt op een bergkam met een weg aan de noordelijke kant. Hier kan je je auto parkeren maar omdat je door de poort van het dorp kan rijden doe ik dat natuurlijk.

Nadat ik door de krappe straatjes ben gereden ben ik redelijk snel het historische dorp weer uit waar ik een parkeerplaats vind. Terwijl wij naar het centrum wandelen kom we langs de Black Horse Saloon; een restaurant met een cowboy thema met zadels als barkrukken. Spannend natuurlijk maar wel een beetje ‘out-of-sync’ met het Middeleeuwse karakter van het dorp.

Kunstenaars

Een Frans dorp is niet compleet zonder een paar kunstenaars en ook in Oingt wonen en werken er een paar. Het dorp en de omgeving zijn ook knettert inspirerend en in de oude straatjes bekijken we meerdere ateliers waar je de producten van de creatievelingen kan bewonderen en kopen. Er zitten best aardige dingen bij.

De straatjes zijn sfeervol, opgeruimd en de mooie huizen zijn stuk voor stuk goed onderhouden. Zoals eerder gemeld is het dorp ontstaan naast, of misschien beter in, een machtige burcht. Daarvan is niet veel over maar de kerk vormt hier een uitzondering op.

Deze staat op een rots boven het dorpsplein waar aan de andere kant een prachtige ronde toren staat. Naast de poort en de kerk nog een overblijfsel van het kasteel. Terwijl we de smalle trap naar de kerk beklimmen scheuren twee grote Nederlandse SUV’s het plein op waar ze parkeren. De harde muziek dreunt even hard over het plein als de deuren openzwaaien waarbij twee gezinnen volledig in de stijl van de Kardashians verschijnen. Altijd fijn die landgenoten!

Kerkje

Het kerkje is goed onderhouden, klein en prachtig. Naast een paar houten beelden is het vrij somber ingericht maar de verhoudingen en het licht in de kerk kloppen en dat maakt het mooi. Grappig is een grote stronk van een wijnrank waar twee gezichten zijn uitgehakt.

Als we weer naar buiten gaan lopen we even achter de kerk langs waar je een prachtig uitzicht hebt over het landschap. Een mooie plek voor een picknick. Natuurlijk willen we ook op de toren voor een nog beter uitzicht. Om de ingang daarvan te bereiken loop je door een soort steegje waar je het gevoel hebt dat je door iemands tuin loopt. De toren bleek gesloten wegens restauratie werkzaamheden. Dat gold ook voor de Maision Commune.

Nadat we de poort hebben bekeken keren we terug naar de auto. Op de terugtocht bespreken we ons bezoek waarbij we tot de conclusie komen dat het Oingt een prachtig dorp is in een prachtig landschap maar dat er iets ontbreekt.

We kunnen er niet precies de vinger opleggen maar het heeft iets te maken met de perfecte staat van alles. Het asfalt in de straten, de goede staat van de panden; het is allemaal net iets te netjes. Een echt Frans dorp heeft een zekere staat van ontbinding, een goede dosis spinrag hier en daar en een plant die uit het dak van de kerk groeit. Dit geeft karakter en dat mis je hier een beetje.
