Sainte-Croix-en-Jarez ligt tussen Vienne en Saint Étienne. Het dorp is gebouwd rondom een klooster dat in de dertiende eeuw is gesticht. De kerk van het klooster heeft interessante fresco’s.

Het klooster is van de orde der kartuizers en dat doet de meeste mensen aan een kattenras maar het is dus ook een monnikenorde. De regels voor deze orde werden in de elfde eeuw opgesteld in het onherbergzame Massif de la Chartreuse, een bergachtig gebied ten noorden van Grenoble, niet zo ver weg vanaf Sainte-Croix-en-Jarez gezien.

De orde is zeer streng in de leer en dat is het nog steeds want het bestaat nog steeds al zijn er nog maar een hand vol kloosters, in het dorp wonen geen monniken meer. De monniken leefden als kluizenaars en de regels zorgden ervoor dat het allemaal niet te gezellig zou worden. Zo praten de monniken slechts één keer per week met elkaar en houden zich bijna de hele dag bezig met religieuze zaken.
Deze strengheid is terug te vinden in de architectuur van het gebouw. Om het contact tussen de leden zijn min mogelijk te houden zijn er enorm veel kleine kamers aanwezig. Hier konden de monniken in eenzaamheid bidden en studeren. Opvallend aan het klooster in Sainte-Croix-en-Jarez is de toegangspoort die eruit ziet als een burcht.
Eenmaal door de poort sta je op de eerste van twee binnenplaatsen die worden gescheiden door de kerk. Het koor van de kerk staat in verbinding met oude kapittelzaal waar fresco’s uit de veertiende eeuw zijn te bewonderen. Via de keuken kom je op de tweede binnenplaats. Deze is helemaal omringt door een kloostergang waar de cellen van de monniken op uit kwamen. Door de week kregen zij hun eten via een luikje naast de deur.
De cellen zijn nu ingericht als woningen en ook het gemeentehuis kreeg aan deze binnenplaats een plekje. Er is nog één cel bewaard gebleven en daar kan je zien hoe het allemaal bedoeld was.
