Het blauwe water van het meer, de achtergrond met bergen en de charme van een oud middeleeuws dorp, dat zijn de ingrediënten van Yvoire, een dorp aan het meer van Genève in de Savoie. Dat klinkt allemaal te goed om waar te zijn maar geloof mij, als je door Yvoire loopt is het allemaal nog veel mooier. Dit is een topdorp; vijf sterren!

Volgens mijn geliefde groene gids is Yvoire twee sterren waard en dat is heel erg veel voor een dorpje. De schrijvers van de rubberfabrikant schrijven dat de tijd langzaam hier gaat en dat je in de haven rustig kan genieten van het landschap, het geluid van de golven en de geur van gegrilde zoetwatervis op de achtergrond. Wel wordt er gewaarschuwd dit niet in het hoogseizoen te doen, want het kan hier druk zijn.

Wij bezochten Yvoire in augustus of wel tijdens de hoogmis van het massatoerisme. Het was er inderdaad niet rustig. Onze gîte stond die week vlakbij Chamonix waar het landschap heel spectaculair is. Vanaf de Mont Blanc strekt zich een soort hoogvlakte uit dat zich tot aan het Meer van Genève. Best een aardige omgeving maar het is even schrikken als je gewend bent om de hele dag naar de hoogste alpentoppen te kijken. Halverwege bekroop mij het gevoel van spijt van deze rit. Waarom laat ik het meest spectaculaire landschap van Frankrijk, en misschien wel van Europa, achter mij om een dorp te bezoeken?

Eenmaal aangekomen troffen wij enorme parkeerterreinen waar we wonder boven wonder onze auto achterlieten op een schaduwrijk plekje. De schaduw en het grote parkeerterrein gaf ons een beetje hoop want daar was nog niets van de schoonheid van het dorp te zien. Yvoire is zoals het mooiste meisje van de klas waarvan bescheidenheid niet alleen de schoonheid camoufleert maar ook daar een onderdeel daarvan is.

De pracht van het dorp laat zich pas zien als je de poort door bent. Hier staat je direct in een prachtig straatje vol met middeleeuwse huisjes. De één nog mooier dan de ander. En ja het is er ook heel druk maar dat boeide mij helemaal niet want ik wist dat de autorit niet voor niets was geweest; dit is een mooi dorp!

En het werd alleen nog maar mooier. Yvoire heeft niet alleen prachtige straatjes, het heeft een prachtig kasteel dat met zijn fundering in het meer van Genève staat. Het verdedigingswerk beschikt over een eigen haventje en dat maakt het een perfect decors voor de verfilming van de graaf van Monte-Cristo of zoals mijn dochter opmerkte; “Als ik een locatie voor ‘Wie is de Mol?’ zou mogen uitzoeken zou ik het hier doen.”

Veerboot

Aan de westelijke zijde van het kasteel bevindt zich de grote jachthaven. Hier kan je lekker zitten, een ijsje eten of iets drinken en gewoon heerlijk kijken want er is genoeg te zien. Zeker op de pier heb je prachtig uitzicht op het meer waarop zeilboten het water snijden. Hier kan je ook de veerboot naar Zwitserland nemen die je in 30 minuten naar de Nyon brengt. Wij hebben het niet gedaan.

Aan de andere kant van het kasteel ligt een oudere haven en dat is ook weer zo’n mooie plek waar je uren kan zitten. Vroeger was dit een vissershaven maar tegenwoordig liggen hier voornamelijk plezierboten. De pier ligt als een halve maan om de haven heen en verraadt hoe het kan spoken op het meer. Tijdens ons bezoek was het erg warm. hield het meer zich rustig en werd de pier gebruikt om een frisse duik te nemen in het diepe water.

Parkje

Naast het haventje ligt een park met een groot grasveld met schaduwrijke bomen en zelfs een strandje waar kinderen heerlijk in het water kunnen spelen. Dit alles met een fantastisch uitzicht op het meer en het dorp. Wat een feest.

Vanaf de oude haven loopt een straat een beetje steil omhoog waar het dorp mij overtuigde om hem vijf sterren te geven. Want naast mooie straatjes, een kasteel, twee prachtige haventjes en een mooi park met strandje mistte ik nog een mooi plein. En die is er ook gewoon, inclusief een oude boom, fontein en leuk terras. Voor ons was het tijd voor een lekker ijsje en dat hebben we dan ook maar besteld.

Yvoire is een heel erg mooi dorp en ja het is er inderdaad druk, maar omdat het vrij groot is en voldoende voorzieningen zijn valt het niet zo erg op.
