Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval ligt op de plek waar twee takken van de rivier de Giffre samenkomen. Het dorp is ontstaan nadat er hier in de twaalfde eeuw een klooster werd gesticht. Het klooster staat er nog en de eetzaal uit de zeventiende eeuw is nog te bezichtigen terwijl een deel van het kerkje uit de dertiende eeuw er ook nog staat. Maar de grootste attractie van Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval is de waanzinnige natuur.

In de winter is het dorp het domein van skiërs en ander wintersporters, terwijl in de zomer hier vooral wandelaars en klimmers zijn te vinden. Een wandeling door het Cirque du Fer is een must. Dit keteldal is ooit gevormd door een enorme gletsjer en herbergt reusachtige steile bergwanden met hoge watervallen. De bekendste is de Cascade du Rouget die niet voor niets de bijnaam ‘Koningin van de Alpen’ heeft.

Ons bezoek aan het dorp was in eerste instantie best verwarrend. De weg naar het dorp is best indrukwekkend. Je rijdt door een vallei langs een rivier met enorme bergen om je heen. Dat is wel meer het geval in de Alpen maar deze weg is wel een van de betere en het verveelt niet zo snel. Bij het binnen rijden van het dorp valt het allemaal een beetje tegen.

Aan de linkerkant staan een paar huizen terwijl aan de andere van de weg parkeerplaatsen en terrassen elkaar afwisselde waar daar naast een paar meter lager een rivier woest zijn weg zoekt. We parkeerden onze auto om de boel te inspecteren. Er is was wel iets van een pleintje met een fontein maar alles was best een beetje saai en buiten het natuurschoon helemaal niet bijzonder.

We besloten de brug over te steken om daar te zoeken naar het mooie van het dorp. En hoewel er best mooie huizen stonden was het allemaal niet bijzonder. Een beetje teleurgesteld stapten we de auto maar weer in om verder te zoeken aan de andere kant van de rivier. Hier kwamen we ook niet veel verder en uiteindelijk reden we terug naar de brug en sloegen rechtsaf richting het natuurpark.

Natuurpark

Het park bleek veel publiek te trekken en na een kilometer of wat stonden we in de file voor een loket. Het bleek dat je voor de auto hier alvast een parkeerkaartje moest kopen of verder te lopen. Aangezien we iemand in een rolstoel bij ons hadden en het pad er nogal slecht uitzagen betaalden we maar en reden verder.

Na een aantal kilometer kwamen we aan bij een zeer grote parkeerplaats die nogal ruw was aangelegd. Dit was enige momenten in Frankrijk dat ik spijt had geen SUV te rijden want de parkeerplaats was nogal rotsig en had veel hoogte verschillen. Daarbij stonden er nogal wat auto’s zodat het nog moeilijk was om een plekje te vinden. Gelukkig mochten onze vrienden in de rolstoel helemaal tot in het keteldal rijden.

Zij stonden er dan ook al een tijdje voordat wij daar aan kwamen wandelen. Eenmaal in het dal begrepen waarom Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval een Plus Beaux Village de France was. Dit is ongetwijfeld één van de mooiste keteldalen in de Alpen en waarschijnlijk in Europa. Het is ongelofelijk groot met aan drie kanten reusachtige muren. Deze zijn echter zo ver weg dat je echt goed moet kijken om de vele watervallen die langs de muur lopen te onderscheiden.

Helaas waren wij niet in staat om een flinke wandeling te maken maar we gaan zeker hier nog eens terug om dat wel te doen. Wij hebben slechts een van een lekkere picknick genoten terwijl we hebben genoten van het zeer fraaie landschap.

Maar als je wel een lange wandeling achter de rug hebt dan kan je in één van de restaurants een welverdiende maaltijd genieten waar je kan genieten van de traditionele gerechten uit de Savoie. Dat daar een flesje witte wijn niet mag ontbreken hoeft niemand je te vertellen.
