Op aanraden van kijkers hebben we ons als programmamakers van het tv-treinreisprogramma Rail Away verdiept in een treinroute door de Franse Jura met de Ligne des Hirondelles (regio: Bourgogne-Franche-Comté). Door alle coronatoestanden hebben we al een aantal Rail Away-reizen moeten uitstellen, maar dit deel van Frankrijk is nog code geel, dus dat biedt perspectief.

Bij Compiègne ten noorden van Parijs is een bijzonder plek in een bos waar Frankrijk zijn hoogte- en dieptepunt beleefde in de twintigste eeuw, symbolisch dan. In dit bos werd in de ochtend van 11 november 1918 de wapenstilstand met Duitsland getekend waarmee de Eerste Wereldoorlog eindigde in een overwinning voor Frankrijk en zijn bondgenoten, op papier althans. Dit kwam hard aan bij onze oosterburen en ze vergaten het nooit. Dit is de reden waarom Hitler in 1940 juist deze plek koos om de overgave van Frankrijk te tekenen waarmee hij de Fransen diep vernederde.
