Er zijn plekken in Europa waar je intens verdrietig wordt én Verdun is daar er één van. Dit is de plek waar voor het eerst op een industriële schaal mensen werden gedood. Het ongekende geweld dat hier losbarstte en tien maanden voortwoekerde maakt Verdun een blijvend litteken op de West-Europese beschaving.

Een tiental kilometer boven Verdun staat midden in het dorpje Romagne-sous-Montfaucon een bijzonder museum. Hier kan je in een grote schuur naast de kerk midden in het dorp een indrukwekkende verzameling spullen uit de Eerste Wereldoorlog bekijken, voelen en ruiken.

Le Vieil-Armand, of Hartmannswillerkopf, is een berg in het zuiden van de Elzas met een geschiedenis. De berg ten noorden van Mulhouse is meer dan 950 meter hoog en steekt vanaf de Vogezen het dal van de Rijn in. In de Eerste Wereldoorlog vonden hier bloedige gevechten plaats die, het zal je niet verbazen, tot niets meer leidden dan heel veel doden en andere ellende. Om deze nutteloze slachting te herdenken is hier een indrukwekkend monument gebouwd met een militaire erebegraafplaats. Het is één van de nationale herdenkingsplaatsen van de Eerste Wereldoorlog van Frankrijk.

Bij Compiègne ten noorden van Parijs is een bijzonder plek in een bos waar Frankrijk zijn hoogte- en dieptepunt beleefde in de twintigste eeuw, symbolisch dan. In dit bos werd in de ochtend van 11 november 1918 de wapenstilstand met Duitsland getekend waarmee de Eerste Wereldoorlog eindigde in een overwinning voor Frankrijk en zijn bondgenoten, op papier althans. Dit kwam hard aan bij onze oosterburen en ze vergaten het nooit. Dit is de reden waarom Hitler in 1940 juist deze plek koos om de overgave van Frankrijk te tekenen waarmee hij de Fransen diep vernederde.

Sinds een jaar of tien ben ik gefascineerd door de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Het is niet echt een obsessie maar als we in de buurt zijn van een belangrijke plek wil ik toch even een kijkje nemen. Zo ook toen wij in de herfst een weekje in de Elzas verbleven en bij toeval aanliepen tegen Le Linge, een plek waar je de Eerste Wereldoorlog bijna kan voelen.

De Vogezen liggen ten westen van de Rijn is één van de middelgebergten van Frankrijk. Vanaf het Rijndal beginnen de bergen vrij plots en rij je redelijk steil omhoog tot ongeveer 900 a 1.000 meter. Vlak daarachter liggen de hoogste toppen van het gebergte. Deze blijven onder de 1.500 meter en zijn daarmee flink lager dan de Mont Ventoux, de maatstaf voor alle bergen. Wat ze in hoogte missen compenseren ze echter met uitzicht en landschap. Deze twee ingrediënten maken het hoogste gedeelte van de Vogezen een unieke en betoverend mooie plek.

De Eerste Wereldoorlog kan rekenen op steeds meer aandacht. Iets ten noorden van Amiens in Beaumont-Hamel ligt één van de grootste monumenten van de slachting van jonge mannen in Noord-Frankrijk. Hier zijn de loopgraven nog te zien in een gebied waar zich een indrukwekkend verhaal afspeelde.

Meer dan honderd jaar geleden begonnen de grote landen in Europa collectief elkaar de hersenen in te slaan. Wij kennen dit conflict als de Eerste Wereldoorlog waarin miljoenen soldaten werden afgeslacht op een betrekkelijk klein gebied in Vlaanderen en Noord-Frankrijk. Na een eeuw zijn de littekens die dit conflict heeft veroorzaakt in het landschap nog altijd te zien. Eén van de grootste en indrukwekkendste plekken ligt bij Beaumont-Hamel.
