Het kasteel van Chantilly is enorm en omvat naast twee musea een prachtige tuin. De ruimte doet al snel denken aan Versailles al is dat natuurlijk allemaal groter en ook wel mooier. Evengoed is ook dit kasteel een bezoek waard. Alleen de tuinen al zijn het waard om deze prachtige plek te bezoeken. En ja hier is volgens de legende de slagroom uitgevonden, maar zoals veel legendes is dat niet helemaal waar. Maar het is een legende en dat is altijd goed bij een groot kasteel.

Picardië is de streek ten noorden van Parijs en kent een zeer rijke geschiedenis. Dit heeft alles te maken met de kleiige grond die de vruchtbaarste van Frankrijk is. Deze grond gaf het gebied aan het einde van de middeleeuwen een enorme rijkdom waardoor hier een merkwaardige bouwstrijd ontstond; wie kan de mooiste maar vooral de grootste Gotische kathedraal bouwen. Het resultaat van deze bizarre race is dat Picardië een bijzonder hoge kerkdichtheid heeft; je komt die enorme gebouwen overal tegen. De meest bekende zijn die van Amiens (de grootste), Laon, Soissons en de halve in Beauvais (de hoogste).

Bij Compiègne ten noorden van Parijs is een bijzonder plek in een bos waar Frankrijk zijn hoogte- en dieptepunt beleefde in de twintigste eeuw, symbolisch dan. In dit bos werd in de ochtend van 11 november 1918 de wapenstilstand met Duitsland getekend waarmee de Eerste Wereldoorlog eindigde in een overwinning voor Frankrijk en zijn bondgenoten, op papier althans. Dit kwam hard aan bij onze oosterburen en ze vergaten het nooit. Dit is de reden waarom Hitler in 1940 juist deze plek koos om de overgave van Frankrijk te tekenen waarmee hij de Fransen diep vernederde.

Gerberoy ligt in Picardië in het noorden van Frankrijk tussen Beauvais en Amiens. Het is ontstaan in de tiende eeuw toen de graaf van Beauvais besloot op een heuvel een flink kasteel te bouwen. Het dorp heeft een lange bewogen geschiedenis maar verwelkomt pas in het begin van de twintigste eeuw zijn beroemdste inwoner: de schilder Henri Le Sidaner.

De Eerste Wereldoorlog kan rekenen op steeds meer aandacht. Iets ten noorden van Amiens in Beaumont-Hamel ligt één van de grootste monumenten van de slachting van jonge mannen in Noord-Frankrijk. Hier zijn de loopgraven nog te zien in een gebied waar zich een indrukwekkend verhaal afspeelde.

Meer dan honderd jaar geleden begonnen de grote landen in Europa collectief elkaar de hersenen in te slaan. Wij kennen dit conflict als de Eerste Wereldoorlog waarin miljoenen soldaten werden afgeslacht op een betrekkelijk klein gebied in Vlaanderen en Noord-Frankrijk. Na een eeuw zijn de littekens die dit conflict heeft veroorzaakt in het landschap nog altijd te zien. Eén van de grootste en indrukwekkendste plekken ligt bij Beaumont-Hamel. Parfondeval ligt in het oosten van Picardië tegen de Champagne aan. Het dorp ligt in een typisch Noord-Frans landschap met heuvels en een agrarische uitstraling. Zoals een Frans dorp betaamt, ligt in het midden van Parfondeval de kerk waarvan de vormgeving verre van normaal is.
