Belvès is één de ‘Plus beaux villages’ die zijn te vinden in de streek rondom de rivier Dordogne. Het dorp van is gebouwd op een kalkrots boven de riviertje Nauze en ligt niet ver van de bekende stad Sarlat. Eén van de pronkstukken van het dorp is de markthal uit de vijftiende eeuw met 23 eikenhouten palen waaronder iedere zaterdag nog altijd markt wordt gehouden. Onder het marktplein zijn holwoningen die meer dan 2.000 jaar geleden al bewoond werden.

De geschiedenis van Belvès begint waarschijnlijk ongeveer 300 jaar voor onze jaartelling toen een Keltische stam deze mooie plek uitkoos om zich te vestigen. Geen slechte keuze gezien het aangename klimaat, de vruchtbare grond en de goed verdedigbare positie. De naam van deze stam, Bellovaci, zou de naam van het dorp hebben gegeven.

Maar er zijn meer theorieën. Volgens sommige is het afgeleid van het Occtiaans bèl ves dat mooi uitzicht betekent, terwijl andere beweren dat het te maken heeft met de woorden bel en vez Occitiaans voor mooi moeras. Hoe dan ook het mag duidelijk zijn dat dit een mooie plek is.

Romeinse tijd

De Romeinen die in de eerste eeuw Gallië veroverden, zagen onmiddellijk de strategische waarde en vestigden hier een legerplaats. Dit gaf de plaats veiligheid maar bovenal welvaart en een goede infrastructuur. De boel moest immers worden bevoorraad en de aansluiting op het netwerk van wegen was goed voor de handel. Helaas is van deze periode niet veel meer terug te vinden in het huidige dorp.

In de Middeleeuwen bleef Bèlves dankzij de strategische ligging een belangrijke nederzetting. Merovingers, Franken en Vikingen brachten allemaal een bezoek aan het dorp waarbij sommige bezoekers de boel niet helemaal achter lieten zoals ze het hadden aangetroffen.

In de elfde eeuw werd er een abdij gebouwd die volgens een legende werd beschermd door zeven edellieden die allemaal een toren lieten bouwen. Het dorp verdiende hierdoor zijn bijnaam ‘De stad met de zeven torens’. Hoewel het nu als een dorp door het leven gaat, was het in die tijd een stad. Deze status is nu nog terug te vinden in het feit dat het dorp de hoofdstad is van het Kanton.

Honderdjarige Oorlog

De late middeleeuwen was een tijd van vallen en opstaan voor Bèlves. In de Honderdjarige Oorlog tussen Engeland en Frankrijk lag het vaak in de frontlinie en was het dorp meer dan eens het toneel van dood en destructie.

Toch kende het ook periodes van rust en welvaart bijvoorbeeld toen Clemens V, die zich als paus in Avignon vestigde, zich opwierp als beschermheer. Deze relatie met de heilige stoel is nog goed te zien in het dorp waar je vaak afbeeldingen en beeldhouwwerk met sleutels en de driedubbele kroon tegenkomt. Ook de plaatselijke ondernemers kiezen vaak een naam die verwijst naar deze paus. Kennelijk verkoopt zo’n heilige naam nog altijd goed.

Na de Honderdjarige oorlog kent de streek rondom de Dordogne een lange tijd van welvaart waarbij de lokale edelen grote kastelen lieten bouwen in Renaissance stijl. Deze bouwgolf ging voor een groot deel voorbij aan Bèlves maar in de directe omgeving is het kasteel van Biron hier een goed voorbeeld van. Evengoed kent het dorp een aantal huizen met Renaissance kenmerken.

Tijdens de godsdienstoorlogen ligt het dorp wederom in het oorlogsgebied en dat laat diepe sporen na. Mede door de hoge belastingen die de koning na deze burgeroorlog heft verarmt de streek en komen de boeren in opstand. Hoewel in het begin succesvol wordt deze boerenopstand (jacquerie) twee keer bloedig neergeslagen.

Bij ons bezoek aan Bèlves regende het pijpenstelen. Dit overkomt ons wel meer in Frankrijk en de Dordogne staat ook bekend om zijn regen. Dit heeft te maken met het Centraal Massief waar de wolken die vanaf de oceaan komen aanwaaien overheen komen. Maar het kan er zeker ook warm zijn. De regen joeg ons direct een brasserie in waar we besloten de bui af te wachten. Hier kwamen er achter dat de grotwoningen onder het marktplein, een perfecte attractie tijdens dit weer, die dag gesloten waren. Resultaat was dat we na dik anderhalf uur wij rennend terugkeerden bij de auto. Het was al laat en er moesten nog boodschappen worden gedaan en zo. Heel jammer want wat ik door de druppels van het dorp zag, was bijzonder mooi.

Mocht je het dorp bezoeken zonder zondvloed neem dan even een kijkje bij de eerste genoemde markthal uit de vijftiende eeuw, het liefst tijdens de markt op zaterdagmorgen. Op één van de zuilen is nog een ijzeren ring te vinden waaraan criminelen werden vastgeketend. De kerk uit dezelfde periode lijkt ook de moeite waard en dat geldt ook voor de grotwoningen onder het marktplein. Maar geniet vooral van een wandeling door de straatjes in het oude centrum en bewonder de prachtige huizen.

Ben in toevallig in augustus in de buurt dan zijn er tal van activiteiten en feesten in Bèlves. Op de eerste zondag is er een middeleeuws festival. Op vijftien augustus wordt er een vliegfestival georganiseerd op het plaatselijke vliegveld en dat is altijd leuk met kinderen.
