Cotignac ligt in op ongeveer een dik uur rijden van de kust en de Lac de Saint Croix. Het dorp, of misschien wel een stadje, heeft mooie pleintjes. Bijzonder is de buurtje dat tegen een tachtig meter hoge wand is gebouwd.

Grot van Thouzon ligt in de Vaucluse ten oosten van Avignon en ten noorden van het stadje Le Thor. Dat laatste is trouwens best een aardig plaatsje met een leuke kerk. Maar dat zijn er natuurlijk we meer in de Vaucluse. De grot is niet heel grot maar heeft wel indrukwekkende stalactieten aan het plafond hangen.

Abîme de Bramabiau is een grot in de streek de Cevennen in het zuiden van Frankrijk. Het is uitgesleten door water dat uiteindelijk door middel van een waterval zijn weg naar buiten vindt. De rivier is in de hele grot aanwezig en omdat er bijna geen water door het plafond sijpelt, zijn hier bijna geen stalagmieten en tieten. Hierdoor ziet de grot er heel anders uit dan je gewend bent.

De Grotte des Demoiselles liggen net ten zuiden van de Cevennen vlakbij het stadje Ganges. De grot is toegankelijk door middel van een soort treintje. Het omvat een enorme ruimte, cathédrale des abysses genaamd, waar een aantal prachtige bouwsels staan die ook nog eens bezaait zijn met glitters. Eén daarvan lijkt op een moeder met kind en dan is de link naar Maria natuurlijk snel gelegd. Et voila; de verklaring van de naam van deze ondergrondse ruimte.

De Ardèche is bijzonder populair als vakantiebestemming en dat is ook goed te begrijpen. De streek heeft prachtige dorpen, mooie landschappen, het weer is ‘s zomers er bijna altijd goed en er is genoeg te doen. Het kan er ook best druk zijn. Wie de drukte en de warmte even wil ontvluchten is het bezoeken van een grot zeker een leuk uitje. Aven d’Orgnac is de grootste grot die je kan bezoeken in de Ardèche.

Baume-les-Messieurs ligt in een dal dat bijna compleet is omringt door hoge steile rotsen. In de omgeving zijn veel grotten en watervallen te vinden. Deze plek werd al in de prehistorie bewoond. Het huidige dorp ontstond rondom het klooster uit de late negende eeuw. Vanuit deze keizerlijke abdij zou het beroemde klooster van Cluny zijn gesticht.

Belvès is één de ‘Plus beaux villages’ die zijn te vinden in de streek rondom de rivier Dordogne. Het dorp van is gebouwd op een kalkrots boven de riviertje Nauze en ligt niet ver van de bekende stad Sarlat. Eén van de pronkstukken van het dorp is de markthal uit de vijftiende eeuw met 23 eikenhouten palen waaronder iedere zaterdag nog altijd markt wordt gehouden. Onder het marktplein zijn holwoningen die meer dan 2.000 jaar geleden al bewoond werden.

De Ardèche is één van de populairste streken in Frankrijk waar in de zomer veel Nederlanders neerstrijken op een camping. Naast het natuurschoon heeft het gebied langs de rivier prachtige stadjes en dorpen. Eén van de mooiste is ongetwijfeld Aiguèze dat is gebouwd bovenop een hoge klif boven de rivier De Ardèche.

Hoewel we al veel van Frankrijk hebben gezien, was het gebied rondom de Ardèche voor ons lang een zwarte vlek op de kaart. We wisten wel dat het mooi was, maar de hoeveelheid toeristen in het hoogseizoen stond ons tegen en voor een weekje in het voorjaar ligt het toch ver.

Langs de rivieren de Dordogne en de Lot zijn behoorlijk wat grotten te bezoeken. Gouffre de Padirac is één van de bekendste en spectaculairste. Dit komt omdat er twee zaken van deze grot zeer tot de verbeelding spreken. Ten eerste bestaat de ingang uit een enorm gat in de grond met een doorsnede van meer dan veertig meter en ten tweede stroomt in de grot een rivier, waar je met gondels overheen vaart. Naast de prachtige zalen zijn het deze twee eigenschappen die deze grot zo geliefd maken bij toeristen.

De toeristen, die sinds halverwege de vorige eeuw in steeds grotere aantallen de Dordogne en de Lot bezoeken, zijn niet de eerste die worden aangetrokken door dit land van melk en honing. Wie de eerste mensen zijn geweest die hier neerstreken, is niet met zekerheid te zeggen. Tegenwoordig zijn de geleerden het er wel over eens dat ongeveer 35.000 jaar geleden Neanderthalers de streek bewoonden. En geef ze ongelijk want het klimaat was er goed, het water helder en er waren voldoende herten en runderen om achteraan te rennen.
