Turenne is een bijzonder dorp in de streek Corrèze in de buurt van de Dordogne. Het dorp is gebouwd op een berg waar een machtige ruïne staat. Deze was ooit van militaire waarde maar nu is het een leuke attractie voor toeristen. Daarnaast is een aardig kerkje waar vooral het interieur interessant is.

Wij bezochten Turenne in begin mei en het was prachtig weer. De lente was net doorgebroken in Perigord en we konden na een korte wandeling rondom het kasteel genieten van een heerlijk zonnetje. Zo zouden alle bezoeken aan één van de mooiste dorpjes van Frankrijk moeten zijn. Goed voor drie sterren.

Turenne ligt op, of eigenlijk rondom, een 320 meter hoge heuvel precies tussen de Perigord, de Limousin, de Quercy en de Auvergne. Je kan dus spreken van een goede strategische ligging en bovenop de heuvel is dan ook een kasteel gebouwd die als onneembaar in de boeken staat. Helaas is het kasteel onder Lodewijk XV vernield maar er staan nog twee torens en er is een mooie Franse tuin.
Henri de La Tour
De beroemdste bewoner van het kasteel van Turenne is ongetwijfeld Henri de La Tour d’Auvergne. Wie heel goed heeft opgelet tijdens de geschiedenisles weet dat deze edelman een sterke link heeft met Nederland. Dat begon al tijdens zijn geboorte want hij is de kleinzoon van Willem de Zwijger. Zijn moeder was Elisabeth van Nassau en een dochter van de vader des vaderlands.
Henri, een bekwaam militair, was toch meer Fransman dan Hollander. Hoewel hij zijn militaire loopbaan begon in de Republiek, trad hij in 1630 in dienst van het Frankrijk van Lodewijk XIV. De Zonnekoning had niet veel op met het steenrijke landje en zocht voortdurend naar een reden om de Republiek aan te vallen. In 1672 was het zover, de Fransen vielen de Nederlanden binnen en het was Henri Turenne die het brein was achter deze invasie die aanvankelijk zeer goed uitpakte voor de Fransen. Door slim optreden kon Willem II Holland toch nog net uit handen houden van de Zonnekoning.
Mooi kerkje
Terug naar het dorpje. Zoals ik al eerder schreef bezochten wij Turenne op een mooie zonnige dag in mei. De natuur genoot van de warmte van de voorjaarszon en verwende ons met prachtige kleuren en geuren van de bloesem.
Turenne lag er op zijn mooist bij maar niemand had het door. Buiten een Frans gezin met kinderen en wij was er niemand die van de schoonheid genoot. En dat maakt het allemaal veel mooier; Frankrijk is op zijn mooist begin mei!
De binnenkant van de kerk in Turenne is mooi licht en hangt vol met schilderijen.inderen was het dorp compleet uitgestorven. Helaas was het kasteel dicht. Dat was wel jammer, want vanaf de hoge torens moet het uitzicht op de omgeving geweldig zijn. Daarbij kan je in de prachtige tuin ook redelijk goed eten terwijl je van het uitzicht geniet.
Gelukkig was de kerk wel open en we troffen er een enthousiaste koster. Met veel elan vertelde hij de geschiedenis van het dorpje en de kerk in het bijzonder. Het is een flinke kerk voor zo’n dorp en vooral de binnenkant is het bekijken waard. De kerk ademt een prettige atmosfeer en er hangen interessante schilderijen. De koster had er een heel verhaal over, maar ik weet niet meer precies wat hij vertelde omdat het al een paar jaar geleden is dat we het dorpje bezochten. Wat ik nog wel weet, is dat hij bijzonder trots was op één van de gebrandschilderde ramen. We hebben er een foto van genomen. Duidelijk was wel dat het dorpje in het verleden belangrijk was. Het is altijd een genot om zo in een kerk te worden ontvangen.
De kerk staat zo’n beetje halverwege tussen het kasteel en het dorp. De huizen in Turenne zijn van het bekende type vakwerk. Deze staan in schilderachtige straatjes die worden aangevuld met hier en daar een poort. Het hele dorp vormt een prachtige combinatie met de omgeving.
Turenne ligt niet ver van de A20 en je kan het dorp dan ook prima bezoeken als je op doorreis bent.
In de omgeving van Turenne
Ongeveer zeven kilometer van Turenne vandaan vind je de Gouffre de la Fage. Wij zijn er niet geweest maar deze grot moet een geweldige entree hebben. Onder de grond zijn er natuurlijk de bekende zalen die mooi zijn aangelicht, een rondwandeling en een parcours voor kinderen. Ze hebben er wat van gemaakt.
