Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port ligt in Frans Baskenland in de Pyreneeën dichtbij de Spaanse grens. Het dorp ligt op de Camino Francé of wel de pelgrimsroute naar Santiago de Compostella. Deze positie heeft de ontwikkeling van de plaats in grote mate bepaald. Daarbij is Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port vooral een Baskische stad waar de de lokale cultuur een belangrijke rol speelt.

Het verhaal van de pelgrimstocht naar Santiago de Compostella begint in de negende eeuw, de tijd dat Karel de Grote over West Europa heerste. Onder zijn heerschappij kent Europa een voorzichtige groei in bevolking, wordt het weer betrekkelijk veilig op straat en bloeit de cultuur weer op. In deze tijd wordt er in noordwest Spanje het graf van de heilige Jacobus gevonden.
En Jacobus is niet zomaar een heilige maar behoort tot de apostelen van de Jezus en behoorde zelfs bij zijn drie beste vrienden. Het graf van iemand die de Verlosser persoonlijk heeft gekend heb je niet zo heel veel en al helemaal niet in Europa. Toevallig werd het graf ontdekt op een rots waar ook de Romeinen een heiligdom hadden ingericht.

Pelgrims
Santiago werd direct een pelgrimsoord en veel christenen bezochten deze plek maar het duurde tot de elfde eeuw voordat het echt een populaire bestemming werd. Net als in de negende eeuw kende Europa in de elfde eeuw een flinke bevolkingsgroei waardoor er eenvoudigweg meer mensen waren. Daarbij kon het geloof op een hernieuwde belangstelling rekenen door met name het gewone volk en de kloosters. Die laatste stimuleerden de pelgrimstochten onder de gelovigen en die naar Santiago was daarbij de meest populaire.
Vooral in Frankrijk, het land met de meeste inwoners in West-Europa, was de Camino populair en er ontstond een netwerk van wegen waarvan drie van de vier routes vlak ten noorden van Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port bij elkaar komen. De nieuwe stroom pelgrims zorgde voor rijkdom en werk en die is eigenlijk nooit opgehouden. Ook nu nog lopen veel mensen de Camino, sommige uit religieuze redenen, andere om andere spirituele redenen of alleen als sportieve recreatie.
Romaanse kerk
Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port is daarmee misschien wel één van de oudste toeristische trekpleisters van Frankrijk. De kerk is opgetrokken uit in Romaanse stijl waardoor je de invloed van de kloosters, met name die van Cluny, kan zien. Opvallend daarbij is dat de klokkentoren een poort heeft die je naar de hoofdstraat leidt. Deze is ingericht op de hongerige wandelaar en je kan hier heerlijk eten en genieten van lokale producten.
Deze hoofdweg leidt naar de Citadel die hoog boven het dorp uitsteekt. Helaas is hij niet te bezoeken omdat er nu een school in zit, maar je kan er wel omheen wandelen. De burcht is gebouwd in de zeventiende eeuw en staat op de plek waar ooit het huis stond van de koning van Navarra.
Lekker eten kan je hier prima. Varkens- en lamsvlees worden hier op een unieke manier geserveerd waarbij niet op een pepertje meer of minder wordt niet gekeken. Naast dit lekkers wordt er een groente schotel met gedroogde ham gegeten. Voor de liefhebber van zoetigheid is er de Pastiza; een eenvoudige maar zeer lekkere kersentaart.
