In Frankrijk zijn dorpen waar je bij het aanrijden direct verliefd op bent. Je kan veel over Pradelles in de Auvergne zeggen, maar dit is niet zo’n dorp. Het ligt niet echt heel geweldig, het centrum met het pleintje is best leuk maar niet bijzonder en ik heb geen kerken of andere gebouwen kunnen vinden die meer zijn dan aardig.

Bij verlaten van de auto bij ons bezoek aan Pradelles vroeg ik mij af waarom deze plek hoort bij de mooiste dorpen van Frankrijk. Je slaat niet stijl achterover van de sfeer, het uitzicht is wel mooi maar niet bijzonder en als je in het centrum staat heb je niet eens het idee dat het dorp is, eerder een kleine stad.

Dit had ik wel eens meer meegemaakt en ik bedacht mij dan ook snel dat ik het mooie gedeelte waarschijnlijk nog niet had gezien. Het was warm en ik stond op een plein dat een beetje schuin naar beneden loopt waar een fontein zachtjes het water liet klateren. In een hoek zag ik een hoopvol bordje staan; er is hier een uitzichtpunt, altijd goed. Ik kreeg er weer zin in, mijn gezinsleden waren echter nog niet overtuigd, ze kregen gelijk maar uiteindelijk hadden we toch een hele leuk middag.

Leuk buurtje

Het uitzichtpunt bevindt zich aan de westkant van het dorp en onderweg kwam ik in een leuk buurtje met mooie straatjes van het type waar niemand is. Dat heb je wel meer in Frankrijk. Tot mijn vreugde bevindt zich hier ook een poort met een bijzonder verhaal. Hier zou tijdens de godsdienstoorlogen Maria, de moeder van, persoonlijk en succesvol hebben ingegrepen.

Wat is het verhaal? In de zestiende eeuw werd er hier een beeld van Maria gevonden, zomaar onder de grond in een weiland naast het plaatselijke ziekenhuis. Een wonder natuurlijk en dat is altijd goed voor een dorp in de middeleeuwen. Helaas voor Pradelles werd het heiligdom niet echt populair maar dat veranderde in de aan het einde van de zestiende eeuw.

De brand, de Hugenoten en het wonder

In 1586 verwoestte een grote brand bijna het hele dorp maar de kerk bleef gespaard. De streek werd in die tijd geteisterd door Hugenoten die op een dag besloten Pradelles aan te vallen. Nauwelijks van de brand bekomen stonden de Hugenoten twee jaar later voor de poorten. Niemand gaf het dorp een kans maar de protestanten werden verslagen en niemand twijfelde eraan dat de heilige maagd hier een hand in had. Daarna ging het snel want dit verhaal verspreidde zich als een lopend vuurtje waardoor Pradelles toch nog beroemd en geliefd werd als bedevaartsoord. Aan het begin van de zeventiende eeuw opende de Dominicanen er zelfs een klooster.

De poort waar de Hugenoten uiteindelijk werden tegengehouden is er nog steeds en is best aardig. De poort leidt naar een pleintje waar de kapel van de heilige maagd staat. Helaas was die dicht. Het is allemaal leuk en mooi, maar ik werd er niet heel erg warm van.

Het uitzichtpunt was van het zelfde laken en pak; leuk en aardig maar niet heel bijzonder. Je hebt een prachtig overzicht over de vallei met een meer, een bos, weilanden en alles erop en eraan. Het meest interessante kwam in pas achter toen ik dit artikel schreef. Pradelles ligt namelijk precies op de waterscheiding van Frankrijk. Iets ten zuiden van het dorp ontspringt de Ardeche en die mondt uit in de Middellandse Zee terwijl de bronnen van de Loire en Allier iets noordelijker liggen en die eindigen uiteindelijk in de Atlantische Oceaan.

Fietsen als een trein

Het is allemaal een negatief verhaal maar uiteindelijk hebben we ons zeer goed vermaakt in Pradelles dankzij de Velorail. Iets ten westen van het dorp ligt namelijk een station dat al lang niet meer wordt gebruikt. Door treinen althans want het station heeft een tweede leven gebruiken en is nu het beginpunt van een velorailtocht. Velorailen is precies wat het woord al zegt; op een klein treintje zijn twee fietsen gemonteerd en voila je hebt de ingrediënten voor een leuke middag. Het is totaal oncomfortabel en je trapt je kapot maar het is helemaal leuk. Na dit avontuur zijn we gaan zwemmen in de krater van een vulkaan die ten noorden van Pradelles ligt.
